My reasoning for not doing a THS has very little to do with ethics. I've dressed a couple of deer that were gut shot and it is not pleasant!! Perhaps to some, it is but not to me. A deer or elk can't have antlers big enough for me to try the shot again.

Of course, I'm not the shot some of the folks in here are. With a mulie stoating (bouncing) away full bore, and my little heart just a pounding, I don't think I could think it out: "Let's see, based on the size of this deer, I will need to shot it exactly 2.5" above the bum. Allowing, of course, for the bounds that the deer is making." Smiler

i guess in motnana we try for the montana heart shot, which involves actually shooting it in the heart.

Thats disgusting and unethical!!!! shame

That is about as relevenat as saying that all the caribou and moose fat needs to be trimmedoff because it will be rancid. BS! We always left the fat on the rump roasts and add the rest to our burger. Excellent!

Ray, we did this for 22 years. If it didn't work we would have done something else.

Mar,

It seems that I would be puking instead of eating at your campsite. No green gravy for me Smiler Smiler

I am not calling you a liar. All I have said is that moose's stomach contents taints the meat. But if you have not problems with poop all over the tenderloins and ribs, I can't hold that against you. Not only stomach contents taints moose meat, but its urine, and even the hairs from the hide near the penis if they get on the meat, as these are coated with urine, semen, and who knows what. Also, keep in mind that a THS will push junk from the intestines or stomach all over the place.

Moose meat is just too valuable to my hunting partners and I to take gut or butt shots. That's all there is to it.

However, those who by whichever reason get stomach contents on the meat (moose meat), the best idea is to wash it thoroughly with plenty of water and a small towel to scrub it off the meat.

Shot a Nyala this way in Natal in 2006; pulverized the spine - meat okay, no gut shot. 300 grain 375 h&h. You have to make the bullet travels straight up the spine.
