Colorado group submits petition to ban 'trophy' hunting of bobcats, mountain lions, lynx

Petition submitted to Secretary of State to become official ballot measure
Deborah Grigsby deborah.smith@denvergazette.com Jul 5, 2024 Updated 21 mins ago

An initiative would declare” the intentional killing, wounding, pursuing or entrapping” of any mountain lion, bobcat or lynx as unlawful is one step closer to securing its place on the November ballot.

A volunteer group seeking to halt the hunting of Colorado wildcats has submitted signatures to election officials to get the measure on the November ballot.

The group called Cats Aren’t Trophies, which is behind Initiative 91, delivered 188,000 signatures to the Secretary of State on Wednesday. The state requires valid signatures from 124,238 registered voters to secure the measure's placement on the November ballot.

“Today we submit signatures to give Colorado voters an opportunity to stop the inhumane, unsporting killing of mountain lions and bobcats for their heads and their beautiful coats,” said Samantha Miller, the group's campaign manager. “This is commercial killing, with lion-hunting guides charging an $8,000 fee to guarantee a ‘trophy’ and trappers selling bobcat pelts to China.”

The initiative would declare "the intentional killing, wounding, pursuing or entrapping” of any mountain lion, bobcat or lynx as illegal. Individuals found in violation of its provisions would face a Class 1 misdemeanor, and, if convicted, would be unable to hold or exercise a wildlife license for five years.

Opponents argue that decisions about managing wildlife resources should be left to wildlife experts — not at the ballot box.

“Decisions about how best to manage our rich wildlife resources should be left to the experts at Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission — not fringe animal rights activists,” Bryan Jones, Colorado and Wyoming coordinator for Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, said in a statement on the Colorado Wildlife Conservation Project website. “Colorado already has strong regulations in place to ensure a healthy mountain lion population, including harvest limits and hunter reporting and inspection requirements.”

The Secretary of State has 30 days to review the petition to determine whether it contains a sufficient number of valid signatures.

We always need to correct when the term "Trophy Hunting " comes up, and refer to it as "regulated sport hunting"

It's larger than the cats, and probably larger than Colorado. The wording of the initiative could be used to end all hunting, and even other uses of wildlife, livestock, and domestic animals in the state, and could easily transition to other states. Coloradans for the Responsible Management of Wildlife is leading the battle against this initiative and other anti-hunting operations.

Sure thing. I heard the head of that group on Randy Newberg's podcast. It sounds like they have their stuff together in this battle. They're developing a response that can (and I hope will) be used to proactively fight this type of initiative in other states. I would encourage others outside of Colorado to consider contributing to the cause, as it could easily help in your state in the future.

An original idea would require CA. residents and those from Portland, OR. to have passports.
ONLY those having visas: immigrant and non-immigrant
varieties issued from other states , may visit or permanently reside in those visa-issuing states.

Others would be classed as illegal aliens, subject to arrest and deportation back to their former West coast states. Fines and possible prison sentences as possible penalties. Twenty years ago and/or just after legalizing marijuana would have been a good time for such CO. laws.

Legal weed and left coast commies have ruined a once red state.

IIRC one of the figureheads is some loony lady from Florida who has lent her “celebrity” to their cause.

Hopefully she gets cancelled.

Been a Colorado resident for 35 years. When I lived in Montana in the 70s we used to call Colorado "The Massachusetts of the Rockies" Still beats many other places in the states to live.

What were the percentages on the Right to Hunt bill that did not pass.

Hate that y’all are going through this. I know a few Outfitters that live and work in Colorado. Sad

Was not one of the concerns of the framers of our constitution the 'tyranny of the masses'? How do you prevent this kind of thing from happening in a democracy? I guess they didn't think of this when they created the Bill of Rights.
