But for all the hunting I do, all I need are:

12 ga.
.223 Rem.
.270 Win.

But that's awfully boring.

A 22 LR
A 222 Remington or 22/250
A 257 Roberts
A strong 45/70 or a 458 Winchester Magnum
A good 20 guage

That would serve all my purposes for hunting in North America,and is all I really need,though "want" always rules for me.

I would probbaly prefer a 270 to the 7mm, but wouldlike the idea of the 7mm sharing the same bolt, shellholders etc.

But I would prefer a pair of 375s

Once you start listing stuff like the .223 you have left what you need. What's it good for?

Col. Townsend Whelan took the summer off and walked thru Canada living off his Springfield. He carried a variety of ammo including cast bullets for shooting small game. Charles Shelton ("Wilderness of Denali") shot everything with a 6.5X54MS.

After the 30-06 any shotgun would be nice.

Africa is another story. I don't think about Africa. If I lived there I would know more about it.

Win. 52 22 LR, 4x16 scope, with a piece of quilted maple stock and walnut burl tips and cap. Miles of fields full of sage rats and forests full of squirrels to use it in.

Rem. 700 22-250 with a Walnut thumbhole stock, 6x24 scope, Rosewood tip and cap, harris bipod, and a hot load. Lots of farm fields and fencerows to pursue crows, rockchucks, sagerats, and coyotes from long distances.

FN Mauser Mountain rifle configuration in .270 with 2x7 Leupold, Bastogne walnut stock with 22 LPI checkering and ebony foreend tips and cap. Matte blue finish on rifle and scope, inlet style sling swivels.

Pre 64 Model 70 338 in a piece of English Walnut, with a handrubbed finish. 3x9 Leupold and QR bases/rings. Short 22" barrel for handling and shoots 225/250 grain bullets into 1" or less all day long- Hornadies and Swift Aframes. Elk, moose, and all the African Plains game I can handle or afford, whichever comes last.

Pre 64 Model 70 375 H&H, English walnut stock with handrubbed finish and G&H style checkering pattern. Leupold 1.5x6E scope on QR Leupold bases/rings, all in matte finish. Shoots 270 and 300 grain Hornadies and Aframes into 1" or less as long as I can stand it. A pissed off Cape Buffalo with my name on it, somewhere in Zimbabwe, Namibia, or some other place I've never been- with good company and a PH I can trust implicitly.

Shotgun- Weatherby Orion grade III field grade in 12 Guage O/U. Most Weatherby wood is pretty fair from the factory, so that part would be fine. Screw in chokes for any occasion, and a great place to hunt chukars until my legs give out.

.30-06 is fine for Africa if you can shoot.
Lots of elephants have been brained with a 7mm Mauser. I now a PH who culls cape buff with his .308 Cogswell and Harrison. It's all about proper bullet construction man!
