Considering that the Jeep in the various CJ forms are amoung the most popular hunting rigs in the country (I use one too),this is a real slap in the face to most Jeep owners. Jeep and most other companys fail to realize that responsible hunters do more for the wildlife than ANY non or anti-hunting group. The whole "No Hunting" sign thing is also a joke.I couldn't understand why I have been seeing so many "No Hunting" signs in National Forest in the last few years.I came to find that PETA encourages anti-hunters to do this to discourage hunting. When I see these signs in the National Forest,I now tear them down. ------------------

I recently bought a Nissan XTerra (which is great off road BTW), but thought hard about getting a Jeep Liberty. My first car was my dad's Jeep CJ-5. After I saw that commerical I'm real glad I got the XTerra. ------------------ - Edward Abbey

I too saw the spot. It outright slams hunters. For one thing - hunters are shown hunting over a road (either it's a public road or the Jeep owners are tresspassing!) I guess Jeep does not want the business of the folks that hunt. They can pull the ad, fire the agency, and apologize or they loose my business. I had been seriously considering buying a Dodge truck until I saw the ad. I'm mot happy about it. Thanks

Here's my e-mail to the three corporate stooges named above: Re: Jeep's anti-hunting ad of 6 January 2002 Congratulations! With your obnoxious commercial, you have managed to offend 15,000,000 U.S. hunters and a major portion of the consumer group that buys your vehicles. A comparison of the demographic profiles of hunters and your customers would reveal to you that there is a great amount of overlap. Portraying hunters as "slobs" and Jeep drivers as "protectors of wildlife" must have endeared you to all those who decry hunting as an effective wildlife management tool (for your information, those same people tend to be opposed to the internal combustion engine and its deleterious effects on the environment). Again, I congratulate you. In one 'brilliant' stroke, you have offended 15,000,000 hunters and guaranteed a sales slump. I know that I will certainly NOT consider a Jeep when I trade in my SUV later this year! Yours Truly, ------------------

When in the business world and a subordinate made an unwise decision or an outright mistake, I usually gave them at least the benefit of ONE CHANCE to correct the error. And I wounder which of us has not made a grevious error in judgement. Hard for me to believe that DiamlerChrysler has taken such a corporate stand on this issue. It's too blatently stupid! And I'll bet that there'll be a retraction shortly. Let's face it, there's an awful lot at stake here for a company and thousands of it's employees struggling to meet tough competitive goals. And let's not judge an entire corporation by a few misguided zealots who thought they could get away with this travesty - until they've had their day in court. If DiamlerChrysler fails to respond responsibly, then they've failed the acid test and deserve the consequences. Glenn I know how they can make it right. Extend zero percent interest and give a 500.00 "hunters" rebate to anyone who purchased a hunting or fishing license last year. ------------------

Howard, To make it right, they ought to purchase the same amount of air time they bought to air the offensive ad and run an apology and give credit to hunters for carrying the burden of game restoration and conservation all these years. ------------------

Glenn, I think you may be too generous in your thinking about Jeep et al. I have purchased 5 in the last 10 yrs and my son just purchased one last year. I was going to trade my wife's in this spring but after I received their "tongue in cheek" reply I think we'll be looking at GM. These companies who take anti gun, anti hunting as a joke need to be penalized financially. I know we're only one family but at least I know they won't be getting our hard earned money. Hope you're well, haven't seen you since Yellowstone.

I like satire and I like "tongue-in-cheek" even when directed at me. I really get a kick out of the Gary Larson "Far Side" cartoons that give animals human traits and make hunters look stupid. My favorite is the cartoon with two bears in the crosshairs of a scope and one bear is pointing at the other. I haven't seen the Jeep commercial so I don't know if it would solicit a laugh or not. I have heard enough to know that Daimler/Chrysler has made a real blunder in airing this commercial that insults such a large part of their core customer base. What were they thinking to stonewall on an apology and retraction? This will make the negative reaction even worse. Eventually, Jeep will decide the heat is too hot and quit airing the commercials. What will be most interesting to watch is the editorial reaction of the various sporting periodicals that thrive on Jeep and Dodge advertising. Dodge sponsers the Texas Parks and Wildlife annual hunting and fishing regulations bulletin. It is one big advertisement for Dodge. I wonder how Daimler/Chrysler will square this with their Jeep commercial.

I don't see it as a mistake or an error in judgement on their part. I see it as a calculated business decision based on the present sales trends and projections. They apparently feel there are more sales to be had from the anti-hunting groups in the years to come. I suspect, if we could peer into Diane Jacksons mind, we'd see her great pleasure.

quote:
Anyone noticed over the last few years how many of the mainstream variety stores have eliminated or at least minimised their offerings of firearm/hunting magazines in the periodical section? I just watched the local Waldenbooks store clear out the majority of their hunting books from the shelves shortly after the new year. I assumed they were getting ready for inventory. Upon inquiry, I was told they were not going to carry them any longer! I immediately surrendered my book club card. When I purchase my books elsewhere, I always stop by to drop off my receipt to the Waldenbook manager. He picks at one of the various pieces of metal hanging from his face and gets a puzzled look on his mug that clearly indicates to me a waste of time and concern. I think we really need to concentrate on the upcoming generations as even here in Wyoming, with its hunting heritage, many youths haven't a clue as to what it is all about. ~Holmes

Holmes, Yes, I have noticed subtle changes, as you have mentioned. Another is that certain Tourism/Hunting Internet sites have removed the hunting sections in deference to their non-hunting clientele who too often complained about the presence of hunt offerings. Oh, they may still offer hunts to those who may inquire, but their websites are now "sanitized". Such trends are growing daily, I'm sorry to say.

I was shocked to see such an ad from Jeep. It doesn't seem like very sound maketing to offend a huge part of your customer base. I can't imagine how many e-mails and phone calls they've received. I looked at the petition twice today, over 3,000 at one point and over 9,000 a little while later. I wonder what Jeep would do if they saw my little "White Jeep of Death" cruising around the Hill Country and South Texas with so many animals stacked on the rack that the wheels rub the wheel wells. Looks like the next one will be a LR Defender. ------------------
