I leave for the musk ox hunt on the 22nd, I’ve got my 35 whelen sighted in, plenty bullets loaded and just to get in the mood, last night I was reading a Boddington article about hunting musk ox in the arctic. In this article he says you need to “completely disassemble your bolt and degrease it to prevent it from freezingâ€. So being form the south and never having to worry about my rifle freezing I have a few questions. Degrease it with what? How do you disassemble a Remington model 700 bolt? Plus if I need to disassemble and degrease the bolt, what about the trigger? If I need to degrease the trigger, how do I do that without taking the rifle out of the stock, which will mean re-sighting it in. ______________________

You can thoroughly degrease the rifle with KG-3. As far as getting your 700 bolt taken apart, that is a hassle. I've done it with a screw driver and arm power, but there is a tool made to dissassemble it. Since you are in Alabama, you can send it to Mickey Coleman and he'd be able to get it taken apart in about 2 minutes for you. Here's his website: Mickey Coleman custom rifles Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my guns

Taking a rem bolt apart isn't tough, either drop the $4 on the plastic tool that can be found at just about any sporting goods store, or look up the directions on their web site. I'd describ it but it would take to long... All you need is a dime and a sharp corner of a counter top or something hard. 5 seconds and its appart. Once you get it apart spray with engine cleaner/degreeser, put a touch of graphite lube on it and re-assemble. Good luck on your hunt. BTW, the only rifle I've ever had a bolt freeze on was a Remington...

I would definitely degrease your bolt. I would definitely degrease the trigger as well if you have been liberal with oil in the past. I have hunted quite a bit in frigid weather, and I've had problems with rifles freezing up. I was hunting once in heavy wet snow and wind that froze the bolt shut in the action everytime I was out in it. JD
