Headed out pre-dawn here on my farm in north Alabama for a Thanksgiving morning bowhunt. Got in my stand to wait for daylight on the 22 degree cold frosty morning. That is cold by Alabama standards!

About 30 minutes after daylight four does crossed the big unpicked soybean field heading to the bedding area behind me. They entered the strip of timber I was set up in about 80 yards to the west of me. Another 45 minutes passed and a nice eight point crosses the bean field following the path of the does. When it was evident he was going to follow the does and not come by the stand, I dug my orange Auburn tiger cap out of my pack and put it on. Gun season is in full swing and orange is required unless you are in a treestand.

I slipped out of the treestand, and shielded by the strip of timber, eased down to where I thought the does had crossed. After a few minutes I hear the buck coming, crunching the frosty leaves. I had to move a few yards to make sure he would be in range and the wind was now not ideal. I saw the antlers first as he slowly appeared. When he stepped out in the open at 22 yards he slammed on the brakes and I knew he had winded me. It was too late, the arrow was on the way and hit home. The buck wheeled around and ran back through the strip of timber. I found him about 60 yards out in the beans.

Happy Thanksgiving and a big "WAR EAGLE" to all!

Nice buck, I'm sure the turkeys were happy you were deer hunting and not chasing them. Congrats and happy thanksgiving.

Congrats! This year was the first year that I can remember that PA allowed archery hunting (doe) on Thanksgiving. If the freezer wasn't full my wife and I would have hunted. We had about a dozen deer roaming about the place yesterday afternoon.

Andy - Congrats for the second time this year!! It indeed looks like you had a nice and successful Thanksgiving. The fact you exited the tree stand and made an excellent stalk and ambush makes it double good.

I was thinking yesterday about giving you a call and now will for sure in the next day or two. That is if I can catch you at home? Seems you are always out bow hunting deer. Wink Congrats again.

Impressive Andy. I know how wild those Ala. deer are. To shoot one in that fashion is a trophy unto its self.

Will and Andy. I guess you guys are on cloud nine right now after the Alabama/Auburn game huh? Just wondering if either one of you attended the game in person? Was exciting to say the very least.

Very nice buck and that was a good way to get him with the knowledge you shared with us regarding the does and already seeing where they had gone through.
