Prvi Partizan 308 180 gr. - adequate expansion range?

Because of a new job, we are moving to the Bangor, Maine area. I have a 308 and am thinking of just stocking up on some Prvi Partizan with the 180 gr. soft point. I don't really plan on anything but deer and bear in the next few years. Judging from the muzzle velocity given on the Midway site (2805 fps) and looking at my Speer Reloading Manual chart, it looks like I will be down around 2100+ fps at 200 yards. That's guessing that the bullet will have a similar ballistic coefficient as a Speer spitzer. The speer bullet has a BC of .483, so I looked at everything down to .440. It all stays above 2100 fps at 200 yards.

So the big question: Do you think this simple cup and core bullet will still expand enough at this speed?

I used to live in Nevada and practiced at the range regularly at 200 yards. Yes, I realize I will probably never shoot this far in Maine (I live in central New York right now). I just want to know what the effective range is for this bullet at this speed.

Something seems wrong here.

First I know of know 308 win load that generates 2800+ with 180 grn. 2675 is about tops.

Second. A 308 180 grn bullet doesn't loos 700 fps in 200 yards from the muzzle.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

In Africa, some years back, the Prvi bullets had a reputation for being soft, whether that was accurate or not, I can't say.

However, how cheap does one need to be? Stock up with Prvi to practice with and buy a box or two of better bullets to hunt with. Federal 180 grain Nosler Partitions would be on my short list, especially for bears.

BTW the Midway site gives 2542 fps as the MV for 180 PP SPs.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR.

I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.

Gato is correct on the fps. Privi says the same thing on their web site, 2542. That should be fine for your purposes. At 200 meters, that is still running 2090 per Privi.

Sorry everyone, that was a typo on my part. I had the ending velocity at 200 yards about right; that was my main concern. I honestly don't know how I ended up typing 805 fps for the muzzle velocity. I wasn't even thinking that. Oh well, if the expansion is still good at 2100 fps then I'm good with it.

Thanks!

If I were in your shoes and those PRVI's shot well enough in your rifle I would use them. Long before the interweb cup and core bullets killed all the game on the planet. It was only after subscribing to the internet that animals realized they were dying to inferior non premium bullets.
Horror stories abound about how utterly inferior Sierra bullets are on game and some how I suffered through using them for decades killing tons of elk, mule deer, Bighorn Sheep Mountain Goat as well as a trip to Africa where I dropped lots of plains game.
Go with the PRVI you are talking about Deer and Black Bear not Rhinoceros and Elephants.

For just a few bucks more you can get Silver State Armory 165 blem Accubonds. Shooters Pro Shop has them for about $21 per box. I shot them tonight and in my rifle they shot groups a little over half inch at 100 yards.
