Bear Hunting in Arizona?
I was wondering if anyone here had any information or tips about hunting black bear in Arizona. I've just started researching the hunts. I would like to attempt a hunt this fall so I have some time to get info together, but was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction.

Such as:

Best areas to hunt (It seems the mountains near Tucson)

Best weapon to use. My inclination would be to use my .300 H&H M70. Am I on the right track?

Spot and stalk or call?

Thanks for any info!

I recommend the Pinalenos (AKA Grahams). Extremely high bear density. At least there was 10 yds ago when I worked on the mountain.

Your gun is a workable. A larger diameter, slower bullet for shorter ranges would be better. I have yet to see a bear there at over 50 yds.

Well, in that case, perhaps my .375 H&H or .35 Whelan AI. [Smile]

JL,

I shot my bear last year (measured) @ 146 yards with a 7mm Mag with a Nosler 160 grain partition in area 27. 27 is very popular, as are 6a, 22, and 23. I plan on hunting bear again next year, using the "spot & stalk" method. Calling works, too, however. We called in three bears at the same time, last year.

I called in a nice Bear ont he San Carlos reservation a couple of years ago. I shot him with my .375 coming in fast to the call. It was an exciting hunt.
