Now that we have the most curious questions on that forum, I would like to put a question, I wanted for a long time. As you know, Im not an US citicen. I have my problems with some of those abbreviations in use. It seems they are used more and more. Could anybody please explain for us foreigners what some things like ROT????? or the like mean. FUBAR = fucked up beyond any repair??? Seems my teacher missed that, anyway, its a long time ago ... thanx, Hermann ------------------

Hermann, I am not American neither, and as you raise this question, I'd like to know as well the meaning of something I've seen on many forums : lol. Can anybody tell me? Thanx

I am glad someone asked this question as I was wondering what ROTFLMAO meant. Naturaly I tried to substitute the obvious for the F word and came up with some interesting conclusions. ------------------

ASAP and FUBAR have military origins. Also there's SNAFU (situation normal, all F***** up.) OTOH - On The Other Hand FYI - For Your Information ------------------

I've seen a lot of new ones that are attractive to the typing impaired like myself. IIRC -- If I remember correctly (I need that one more often nowadays.) AFAIK -- As far as I know. Some Oldies: AKA -- Also known as , an old police expression. TU --- Usually spoken in milspeak as "Tango Uniform" Shorthand for "Tits Up" or dead. Sometimes used as a substitute for FUBAR by effete Air Force types. CF -- Spoken as Charlie Foxtrot around women and squids, means Cluster F**K, an old USMC expression for normal miltary operations. CJ -- Circle jerk ; same general use as Cluster F**K, but possibly worse as the implication is that there is no possibility of a fruitful outcome.

I always thought LOL meant "Laughing Out Loud". Same diff, I guess. Two common ones I didn't notice above are WRT, meaning "With Regard To", and FWIW, meaning "For What its Worth". Also variations on themes, like...IMNSHO (in my not so humble opinion), or JMO (just my opinion), or ROTFLMAOWTRDMF (rolling on the floor, laughing my ass off, with tears rolling down my face), etc. Other less common ones: JMTC (just my two cents), BR (best regards), TC (take care), GBFN (good by for now), etc. GBFN, Canuck

Another one that may have little use in Europe is RSVP (respondez s'il vous plait), which is french for "Please Reply". RSVP ASAP is pretty common around here. Canuck

Have you ever been to a bar and ordered a TGV (here it is a Train Grande Vitesse / High Velocity Train, but it also means Tequila/Gin/Vodka which is a high velocity drink). I know, I know, we froggies are all winoes... Another one, used in Spain : NPI (Ni Puta Idea). Should it be NFI in English? BC (bien cordialement) KB

I forgot to mention that a common question in the USMC is: "Who's the pivot man in this circle jerk?" Translates to "Who's responsible for this wasteful mess?" Don

Us auto techs use those BFH's alot. We also have a phenom called PFMT that we use to explain why cars never act up when we drive them the way they do for the owners of the car. That is the Pure Freaking Magic Theroy (PFMT) We also use another one called CYA (cover you ass). This means document every thing on paper! X-Ring ------------------
