I thought I would share an interesting story. My neighbor is the state big game bioligist here in NW MT. She told me yesterday that in the last 2 weeks of the season there have been two hermaphrodite black bears checked in by hunters. She personally examined the first one and thought it was very unusual that the 7-10yr old bear appeared to have never nursed cubs. She explained that this bears nipples were pink and tight like would be seen on a maiden bear. Once they have been suckled by cubs they darken, get a bit leathery and remain saggy/stretched. The female anatomy all appeared normal,She was palpating it and discovered that it also had about a half of normal length baculum right where it should be in a male bear.

A few days later she got a call from a hunter who had also checked in his bear but was examined by the other bioligist in the office. They had noted during the exam that this was also a 7+ year old female that appeared to have never been bred. It appeared otherwise normal. When the hunters taxidermist skinned the bear he discovered a baculum in that one also. The bears were taken in the same county but many miles apart.

My neighbor is a career bioligist and former bear specialist and says that she has never seen this before. She posted the info and the only reply she received was from a Yellowstone bioligist who had seen one about twenty years ago.

So if you shoot an old sow but it looks like a maiden bear, double check its plumbing!

I never met the person but, old friends told me one of their neighbors was one.

Hell of a deal. Many times having one for some species is a real "hang up". like dogs getting stuck together. From what I've read the only reason that happens is too deep a stroke/thrust, gets beyond the 'bone' and it twists sideways

I had a friend that had a daughter born that way, they operated on her by the time she was 10 days old and made her into a girl.

I did a little Google search and interesting enough there are several documented cases in polar bears
