I am looking for outfitter recomendations for a brown bear hunt, hopefully in 2004. Who have you hunted with and would you recomend them? It is a lot of money for this hunt and I do not want to blow it hunting with the wrong outfit.

Thanks.

ronl, you might try JJ hack at customosteo.com. He used to do a good bit of bear hunting. If he can't help you Ill bet he can get you to someone who can. He seems to be a straight shooter(no pun intended). Good hunting, I wish I was going. "D" Ps. I will be over your way this evening as our Mustangs play TC Roberson tonight. Wish us luck. I expect we might need it. They are second in the conference.

I have been with Wayne Woods of Woods outfitting in Palmer AK. Two years ago I took a 9.5ft Grizzly with him. He is very good with good equipment. E-Mail me and I can get you his number if you wish.

There are several distinct regions of Alaska to hunt Brown Bear...SE Alaska where you tend to stay on boats and cruise the coast looking for brown bear on the beach (and once in awhile you may go ashore and glass)....hunts on the Alaskan Peninsula where it is a bit more rugged and streneous sleeping in a tent with a lot of wind and rain (average bear is bigger than SE Alaska) and then you have Kodiak Island which can be very rugged.

Do you want to hunt in the Spring or the Fall? Do you want a really big bear and are willing to risk going home without one or do you want a nice representative bear?

Be truthful to yourself and whoever you book with as brown bear hunting can be some of the toughest, nastiest hunting around....hills can be steep, cold, wet and windy weather and expensive.

I would contact the Alaskan Guide's Association and get a copy of their yearbook...lots of ads, lots of photos and good stories.

I book for Alaskan Master Guide and gun editor Phil Shoemaker...Phil has a 100% kill rate and two years running his clients shot the 3 largest bears in Alaska, and two world records....He has a very limited number of penning as he hunts his concession very lightly....$12,500.

I also have some Kamchutka bears in Russia.$9,500.00....

Ray, wasn't it you -- or maybe someone else -- who said the Kamchatka bears aren't necessarily larger than the Alaska bears (or even the same size) but that they're more plentiful? Are there clear advantages to Kamchatka bear hunts?
