Today was the opening day of deer season in Texas and it was a special one because I took my 8 year old son out to the blind with the intention of letting him shoot his first buck on his own. I had a gunsmith customize a Remington 700 .223 for him. We cut the stock down and cut and recrowned the barrel to 20". We've been shooting paper for several weeks and the little gun will shoot under an inch all day long. At 6:45 this morning this buck walked out. I held Mason off a young 8 pointer earlier. When this boy walked out I knew he was the buck! Mason made a great shot at about 50 yards and the buck ran 20 yards and piled up. We sat in the blind until 7:00 and two more bucks came out...one making a scrape about 100 yards away. At 7:15, we left the blind and trailed the buck. Needless to say, I don't know who was more excited, Mason or his old man! This hunt will go down as my favorite of all time.

Bwana,

That is just too cool. You know your just nor going to be able to punch any buck in ID to beat your son's. I can only imagine how proud you are.

Good show and congrats to you and your boy.

Regards,

Mark

Congratulations to you and your son. I think I still get more excited when one of my daughters shoots a deer or elk than they do. I'll always be grateful to my dad for passing it on.

Congrats to the young man. I have the feeling Pop is strutting a little to, maybe?

My wife and daughter will be hunting for the first time this year. As we all know, one of them will harvest the 12 point I have been watching for two and a half years, but that's OK, we may just make life long hunters!

Again, let the younster know he's got a dandy!

You've got that right! Funny how you can travel the world hunting and still get buck fever when your kids are after their first deer.

Very nice buck Bwana. Congratulations to Mason and to you.

P.S. I spent this weekend near Inez. There are so many acorns on the ground that the deer don't have to move 20 yards to get their fill.

That is an excellent post. Congratulations to both you and your son. He will never forget that hunt or how you made him his own custom rifle to fit perfect. That is a real confidence builder!!

It's parents like you that keep kids on the right tracks. My son is 4 and he already asks when he can go hunting.

That is simply an outstanding first trophy. < !--color-->
