Virginia Elk Hunt Lottery applications open through March

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Applications for the Virginia Elk Hunt Lottery are open until the end of March, according to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.

The lottery offers the opportunity for hunters to hunt bull elk in the Elk Management Zone of Virginia during the upcoming hunting season.

The department said the lottery is open until March 31, and the hunt for the 2025 through 2026 season is scheduled for Oct. 11 through Oct 17.

A total of five antlered elk licenses will be available for this year’s hunt through the lottery system.

To apply, folks can visit the department’s website or call 1-866-721-6911 for help applying via phone. Applicants who live in Virginia are required to pay a non-refundable fee of $15, and out-of-state residents must pay $20.

If selected, winners must purchase a special elk license at $40 for Virginia residents and $400 for out-of-state residents. The license is non-transferable.


According to the department, winners of the elk hunting lottery will be chosen through a randomized computer drawing and will be notified by May 30. Applicants can also check the status of their application by visiting the department’s website.

In addition to the five licenses available through the lottery, the department plans to give a sixth antlered elk license to a conservation organization through the Elk Conservation License Program. The chosen organization will then hold a raffle for the license.

The department said all revenue generated in application fees and license sales for the hunt will help fund its management and conservation of wildlife.
