Well, next to last day of the season, after tons of "bad luck"...invited an internet forum member to come down and hunt with me...

90 minutes later....

Got this one after he filled his doe draw tag...
This buck was chasing his doe for the rut..

170 lb Blacktail.. taken with Ruger 77 Mk 2, chambered in 260 Rem, shooting 100 grainers, load of 22 grains of Blue Dot, MV 2600 fps...
Distance was 100 yds, uphill... lucked out and got a heart shot..

tight shot, but shooting varmints and range time paid off.... clap

cheers

A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him "Why do you carry a 45?" The Ranger responded, "Because they don't make a 46."

Is Blacktail Deer General Centerfire season over with already? Time flies.

I only went out once and that was to pre-seaon scout for possible elk areas. I took along my working shotgun that I've had for 40-some years, 10 shells of Number 6, 3 1-oz slugs, and a .22 LR handgun, just in case I ran into something huntable.

Went west on Highway 26 then down past Timber, checked out some new growth - some foraging, deer tracks, mostly does, old rubs. Flushed a covey of quail but I decided not to deprive the young 'uns of their momma. The quiet woods, no recent human footprints, the rain, I turned for home with empty bag, revitalized from even that one day alone in the wet Oregon woods.
