Area 700 is full of antelope. If you are going on your own, find an area that has a large "chunk of BLM or public hunting. You will be able to see this on a topo map or a gazeteer of Montana. Now for my personal experience. I have hunted around Alzada and Brodus several times. The big pieces of public land North of Alzada are tougher to hunt and have fewer antelope in my opinion. Also, more of the country in gumbo. If you feel one rain drop you better be driving out of that country. It is impossible to drive the two tracks if they get any rain. The areas around Brodus seem to hold more antelope and the country is better for stalking. There is less of the bandlands gumbo. Once you find a nice piece of public ground, it never hurts to go knocking on a few doors and shake hands. You might be suprised by where you can hunt. Good Luck and pm me if needed, ddj The best part of hunting and fishing was the thinking about going and the talking about it after you got back - Robert Ruark

Look at a lot of pictures of antelope heads and horns to help you pick out a good one. Antelope meat is very good to eat. The wife and I always bought extra doe tags. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Contact the Miles City Game and Fish office for Block Management lands in 700. There's lots of access off Moon Valley Road between Broadus and Miles City. Have fun!

I agree. The area North of Brodus and along the Powder River would be my top choice. Also if you want a really fun hunt with lots of game, look at the South side of the CM Russell. Beautiful country with tons of game. I was there last year and saw more game than I ever have seen in Eastern Montana. There is probably more public land there than around Brodus. ddj The best part of hunting and fishing was the thinking about going and the talking about it after you got back - Robert Ruark

I will be hunting in WY just across the border from near Weston to the MT border. The people I'm hunting with talk about Broadus all the time. Best of luck, push some of those big bucks south please. "The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry" - Robert Burns

Have fun. Book a hotel today!!! Eastern MT has few hotels and they fill quickly. I've seen lots of antelope throughout the entire region. The area NW of Forsyth and West of Jordan has had some blue tongue issues and I think populations may be a little lower than they could be. I don't think there are any Block Management books for 2009 yet, but the 2008 list will likely be close enough. "We are what we repeatedly do. IF bird hunting is an option, take a serious look at the South side of CM Russell. Really. ddj The best part of hunting and fishing was the thinking about going and the talking about it after you got back - Robert Ruark

Michael, I've been hunting south east Montana the last 3 seasons. Got bucks all 3 trips and all on public land. An old friend of mine told me how he hunts for antelope and his advise works for me. The land I hunt is hevily pressured. We park our truck so it is not readily visble to most antelope. We walk about a mile or more off the "road" and park our butts in " a good spot ". Its best to get there while its still dark. When the sun comes up there is often antelope feeding in the area. If not its just a short wait untill the locals start driving around. The antelope start moving around when other trucks are miles away. Its only a matter of time before some come by in range. It works for me. Greg

Greg, Your system is a sound one as I park the truck and only start it again when leaving. The one time I hunted antelope we were in area 26 outside Douglas Wyoming and we were doing our walking and scouting and had a truck full of hunters ride up and tell us that there were no antelope to be found. We already had 2 down and I shot mine later in the day but unfortunatley the taxidermest I brought mine and my buddies heads to went out of business and dissapeared. long time ago 1977 while I was in gunsmithing school. Thanks for the reminder. Michael J Michael J
