This year I was fortunate enough to draw a bull moose tag in Maine (WMD 9) as a non-resident. I was even more fortunate to take a nice 45" bull.

There is so little information on moose hunting in Maine along with guide information, I thought I would share my information.

I chose to use Guy Randlett of Maine Trophy Moose. Guy is dedicated to his guide service and works as hard pre-scouting as he does during the hunt. For myself, I had limited time available and was willing take any good representative bull even though Guy prefers to shoot bulls that exceeds 50". With good pre-scouting (he had a map with GPS coords that outlined all the spots he had seen good moose during pre-scouting), Guy was able to pull this off. In fact, I shot my bull with in the first 45 minutes of the season and at 15 yards as he came right into Guy's calling. He had seen this moose two days before in the same bog. Luck he was still hanging around? Probably...

Everything Guy promised was executed flawlessly and I would say that after seeing other guides in the area I knew I made the right choice. From what I saw, many guides only drive the logging roads searching for ANY moose that they happen to stumble across. You would then see the back up truck following behind the hunter in case they shot one. This seems to be the common practice and just my impression. However, Guy is about 2x the price of other guides I talked, but I truly believe it was worth extra dollars. By this I mean, we where off the beaten path walking and stalking rather than hunting from a truck. In fact, the other hunter in camp shot a real nice 51" bull about 500 yards from any sort of trail. He also only hunts 3 zones and takes 4 hunters per year, where as many guides will hunt what ever zone you draw, book as many people as they can, and the guide could possible not have any experience in the zone you drew.

If anyone chooses to use a guide to hunt Moose in Maine, I would seriously give Guy a thought or at the very least quiz the guide you are thinking about as to their hunting practices and the zones they hunt. Yeah, I am plugging Guy Randlett, but after hunting around the world and having some interesting experiences, this is one of the better outfits I have hunted with recently.

Congrats on the successful hunt! A few questions if you don't mind:
1) What did you shoot him with?
2) How far was the shot?
3) How far did he go after the shot?
4) What made you apply for Moose in Maine since you are closer to Colorado, Wyoming, etc?

Thanks for posting the story and congrats again! beer

congrats on getting a great moose and pulling a highly coveted moose tag. Hopefully one of these years I will be lucky and get a tag.

Sweet moose, congrats! I've been putting in for a few years no with no luck. I own some land in maine and we deer hunt it every year. I hope to draw moose someday, but it's pretty tough. Do you have contact for this guide?

Thanks for the comments guys:

x-cal to answer your questions.

1) Remington 700 bdl LH, 200 grain TSX loaded with 76 gr. of H4831 SC
2) 15 yards
3) I have had better shooting at 300 yards. This wasn't the best, but he only made it about 200 yards.
4) Maine? Well, I never have been able to draw Colo. or Wyoming for Moose. This was the first to come.

Thanks, Charlie

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.
