Hey lads

Please accept my invitation to come hunt wolves in Idaho.

For a total cost of $186.50, as a non-resident,you can take a wolf in Idaho and for an additional $31.75 you can take another one. Our 2fer special comes to $218.25 total cost to take 2 wolves in Idaho. You will need to hurry as this 2fer special only runs from now until March 31, 2012. Don't delay...act now. If you are a trapper have we got a deal for you. You can take 3 wolves for the same rated fees.

Most of the state has no quota on it although some areas will have some quotas and those areas are shut down when the quota is met. As the winter progresses with snowfall, the deer and elk move down from the higher elevations and the wolves, coyotes and mountain lions follow them. No additional licenses are needed for coyotes but lions do have other fees, tags and quotas.

Areas to hunt can be identified by Googling wolf pack map Idaho and you will see that almost all of Idaho north of the Snake River is home to an existing wolf pack. I received a email photo of a wolf pack consisting of 26 wolves in the Stanley area of central Idaho taken this fall at the opening day of elk season. Guess what? the elk harvest in that area was down. In the more northern parts of the state is the Lolo area which has seen elk populations decline from 16,000 to 2,000. Idaho Fish & Game is slated to begin some aerial gunning later this winter. Areas just north of Boise are excellent as are areas around Fairfield which is close to Sun Valley. Fly into Sun Valley and spend a day on the slopes followed by a swim in a natural hot water pool only to be followed by a wolf hunt. As noted above Stanley Idaho is not that far from Sun Valley.

I have the link to the F&G web site listed below and the wolf hunt is an any weapon hunt. Bring your friends and don't go home empty handed.

Yes, the wolf tag itself has been reduced for non residents to $31.75 but you will need the non resident hunting license also for $154.75.

For residents the wolf tag is only $11.50. Tell you something about the Idaho F&G approach to wolf hunting, doesn't it? The only tragedy is, where were they on the front end of this crap heap???

Just checked out some hunts...no wonder there aren't enough being killed, outfitters are asking 3-5000 for a wolf only hunt. Way too much to shoot a giant dog

I would expect that for any body just flying in to shoot a wolf.

It well be very hard to do with out some local help.

They just don't stand around in the open saying shoot me. At that time of year the mountain roads well be snowned in making it hard to get around.

Not that it isn't a good idea to shoot them but it well be very hard with out local help.

Sounds good but I dont know jack about hunting wolves..

I assume trapping is more effective. ??

Maybe we should check with the Alaska forum for some tips?

Thanks to some great folks on this site I spent 10 days in Oct. hunting wolves out of Stanley. Great country, lousy wolf hunter.Next year I'll go before deer season and improve my calling.A wolf is now my quest. I learned a lot about the area and will be ready next fall. What is the chance of the snow retreating before the end of march.

Sorry to hear that you didn't score.

The chance of snow retreating before the end of March? Depends on where you are talking about. If you're talking about the Stanley area it usually clears up around the middle of April especially on the north facing slopes. Of course the last place to have snow melt off of it is the roads, unless there is some heavy use.

I love that Stanley area with all of it's hunting and fishing opportunities. It is also one of the most beautiful spots in the West. Ocean run steelhead trout come up the river systems to that area as well as some of the salmon. In the late spring when the wild flowers bloom those meadows that go for miles and miles are covered in reds, blues and yellows.

Teancum, thanks for the kind words. I guess I'll wait until early fall to try again. I imagine the game will still be up high but I am trying to balance that against no deer/elk rifle hunters. This past fall I saw much less game after opening day. Next year I will be ready to concentrate on the high wilderness areas and do a lot more calling. Any knowledge or advice would be much appreciated

thanks, mike r

To trap wolves in Idaho you have to take their class on trapping which takes 8 hours..
Classes have been full and there is a waiting period so sign up soon. Idaho only has two instructors for the entire state.

Another thing to consider is the wolf in Idaho has been clasified as big game so no AR-15's with 30 round mags. There is a restriction on the amount of ammo your gun can hold when hunting big game.

I don't hunt with a black gun, but I've never heard that you can't. Full auto no way same with BMG's

here's what our regs say:

Rifle and Shotgun
In any hunt, including any-weapon seasons, it is unlawful to
pursue or kill big game animals:
• By any means other than approved firearms,
muzzleloaders and archery methods.
• With any electronic device attached to, or incorporated
on, the firearm or scope; Except scopes containing
battery powered or tritium lighted reticles are allowed.
• With any firearm that, in combination with a scope, sling
and/or any attachments, weighs more than 16 pounds.
• With any fully automatic firearm.
• With any shotgun using shot smaller than #00 buck.
• With any rimfire rifle, rimfire handgun, or muzzleloading
handgun, except for mountain lions.

I could be wrong though.

Stanley area is still pretty snowy till Late april especially if we have an average snow pack (ain't looking that way so far this year)

99% of all idaho wolf hunters still have their unfilled tags, and that has been the case since our first wolf season.

ain't no walk in the park---I've only seen a grand total of 1 wolf.

I know an guy here on AR was selling guided hunts earlier this fall for the Salmon area, never heard if anybody got one.

Sawtooth area is a beutiful place, good luck.

Here is an update on the 2011-2012 Wolf season to date. As shown in this report there have been 157 wolves taken by firearms and 5 by trapping. All areas in the state are still open. Don't wait.... come to Idaho and help us with the wolf overpopulation. Harvest one or two of these critters.

You are 100% correct according to your quote from page 67 of the 2011 Big Game Hunting brochure. No restriction on the magazine capacity of your rifle or pistol. You could legally hunt with an AR using a 100 round drum if you chose to. I love Idaho.

The only AR restriction would be if your AR was set up to shoot rimfire rounds, then it would be prohibited for wolves but not lions. I love Idaho.
