Kamo GariNeat. Can you share more about the hunt? Is it a ranch, or public land? Costs? Guides required? Trespass fees?
TIA, and congrats to your gang, especially to your son!

UltraMagAloha All,
First of all thanks for the compliments it was truly one of my best hunts ever. Not only because it was my sons first ever deer hunt but also because of the comraderie shared with great friends and family. It was just golden and Ann I agree with you a 100% his smile is priceless and I will cherish them always.
KG,
The hunt took place on Molokai Ranch we hunted with an old friend there that weve hunted with for years. As far as cost goes I can only give you an estimate as he has several areas that he hunts and I know that some area's cost more. And because we are local the cost is different as well naturally. Guides required? I am not sure because we are friends and hunted a long time there we know the areas well so mostly just drops us off and picks us up type of deal and leaves the rest up to us. But I do know that he does have people who help him guide hunters etc.
Hunt cost= $600 for a buck and doe
Lodging at his place= $85 a nite for up to 4 people and $110 a nite for 5+ people. Something of note here this is a total cost meaning the cost per nite is not per person but for all people e.g. $ 85 divided by 4 people= $ 21.25 per person per nite. and so on...
We buy and cook our own food at the house but you can go into town and grab a bite to eat as well its up to you. But beware everything closes real early. Or you can stay at a hotel there not sure on cost though.
I dont think there are any Trespass fee's just hunt cost.
Kudu56,
Thanks but the buck is my friends I wish I had the good fortune to get my sights on that one

Yes, You heard right the meat of Axis deer is the best ive ever tasted bar none. I have been hunting them for about 20 yrs or so and still cant sleep the night before the hunt.
Also the bucks in the photo's that my friends harvested on the hunt were both 35 inches the wide one in the first pics was 30 1/2 inches wide and the other one had a spread of 27 inches. The biggest to come out so far this year was just a tad under 38 inches and I believe last year one came out that was LITERALLY a HAIR under 40 inches as I know the Taxidermist that mounted it.
Take care and ALOHA!!!!

308SakoThat is some fine success! Having had the pleasure of hunting Molokai (1995, with Gene Yap) I appreciate the extrordinary effort you all must have put in. The boys are so fortunate, and did very well. Graet report. Thank you

HauptjagerUltraMag,
Very nice kills. You stated that you took one with a 25-06. What did you use for the others? I’m on the Big Island and have had some luck on Mufflon using my 375 H&H. (Way over-Kill!) I have a Rem. 788 in 7mm-08. How do you think that would do for large Axis? Thanks for your input.

UltraMagHauptjager,
I think the 7mm-08 is a wonderful caliber and would be more than adequate for Axis Deer. The bottomline with ANY caliber as you probably know is hitting them where it counts and the 7mm will definitely do the job if you do yours.
The other deer were taken with a 300 WSM and 7mm Rem Mag. Do you do alot of hunting on the Big Island???
Take it easy,
Dom

HauptjagerUltraMag,
You know between work, family and football, (not necessarily in that order) my time is short in the fall, however when I can find someone to hunt with, I go. For me hunting was / is something to do with good friends and family. Sadly, most of my friends on the Big Island do not hunt… So I usually wait for my brother-in-law (Chasseur) to come over then we go. I don’t have dog’s so my mammal hunting is spot and stalk.
I can’t wait to get the 708 out and see what she will do. Come to think of it my family gave me a nice black power rifle last year and I haven’t blooded it yet either…
If you get over this way, we should go.

UltraMagHauptjager,
Yeah I know what you mean about finding the time to go hunting. Luckily for you though you live on the better if not the best island to do spot and stalk hunting. Too bad you dont have more hunting friends. If I am going up that way I'll definitely let you know and maybe we can hook up for a hunt or something thanks for the invite.
Let me know how things work out with the 7-08 and the BP Rifle im sure you'll do well.
Aloha!!!
