About a year ago or so... I posted a similar post. Now Accurate reloading has many new members and the world of cartridges and our experiance(s) is slightly larger.
Hate is strong word... but I think you know what I mean. I am a big believer in ANY CARTRIDGE THAT FURTHERS THE SHOOTING SPORTS, but do have my dislikes and preferances. Some people dislike certain cartidges because of bad experiances with rifles, game shooting ect... and other just dislike certain ones because they are too popular. I would like to hear some of your responses.

I have no use for any 270 cartridge. They are bigger than necessary for deer and are smaller than I would use for elk or moose. As for the 30-06,I believe it's popularity relies on it's military past and the availability of cheap surplus rifles. It does the job but many other cartridges do a better job.I choose my cartridges based on ballistic performance not on history or popularity ,as history or popularity do not make a cartridge a better killer of game animals.

I also dont like the 243 but the one cartridge I realy hate is the 30/30. I have a 30/30 savage bolt action and I have been trying to come up with a good use for this gun for about 15 years and cant. With all the other cartridges out there, the 30/30 useless.

I don't hate them in the least, but I have no need for the following.

243
30-30
Any of the Short Mags
Any of the Ultra Mags
Any of the Weatherby Mags (except for the 7mm. I'm kind of partial to that one)

Cartridges that I have a weak spot for.

223
220 Swift
Anything based on the 30-06 case
375 H&H
458 Lott

I wouldnt say i "hate" any of them. But a few things really bother me. One is that people seem to think a certain cartridge is better than another just because. It doesnt matter what fired the bullet, the same bullet at the same velocity does the same thing. I posted on another forum that i was going to sell my 300 win because i already had a 30-06 and wanted something that would have more punch for elk like a 338 win. So the first reply was i should forget the 338 and get a 300wsm, because it is "better". WTF?? Better than a 30-06, debatable, but better for elk than a 300 win? Yeah get something right between the two and its gonna be more effective than either one right? The other is that somehow super high velocity is the answer to every thing. Gee get a 300 ultra, its got more energy than a 338 win, so it is more "powerful", right? It also really bothers me remington doesnt sell a 338 win, you have to buy an ultra. Dave Petzal latest articles on the short mags and his latest recommendation for elk rifles really bother me too. I dont think most elk hunters are better off with a 338 ultra or 340 weatherby. They are fine cartidges, but your average hunter doesnt shoot much and probably doesnt have the ability to hit the vitals of an elk past 250 yards. Serioulsy, is the ultra the right tool for the average hunter? Are slower rounds like the 338 win or 338-06 really less effective? Would the average guy shoot better with a 338-06 than a 338 ultra mag? I think so.

So i guess even though i dont "hate" them, you can count me in on the anti short mag and anti ultra mag side. Just based on general principle. [Big Grin]

Don't actually hate any cartridge, but have no personal use for:

243 Win
7mm Rem Mag
45/70
Ultramags
Super short mags.

I could possibly find a personal use for one of the above should anyone care to send one to me. Email me if interested! [Roll Eyes] [Big Grin]

I don't really hate any cartridge, but there are a few I don't like. It is the rifle I think that is more important than the cartridge. Usually bad experiences with a crappy rifle (eg. 7mm Mag/BSA, 270/Parker-Hale) lead one to believe all rifles in 7mm Mag and 270 Win are garbage.

Don't like:

- 22-250
- 25-06
- 264 Win Mag
- 7mm WSM
- 7mm STW & Ultra
- 300 Win Mag
- 300 Ultra & 30-378 Wby
- 444 Marlin

Personally I've yet to meet one I didn't like. Something new is something fun with which to play.

I don't particularly care for the marketing hype of the RugRemChester clan but I do understand it's how they sell a lot of rifles and I do tend to favor capitalism.

To each his own but the person making the point that a bullet of given dimension exiting the barrel at the same speed not knowing what case it came out of is dead on correct. MOST of these discussions are rather banal and tend to be little more than pissing contests.

358 Win.- big bullet, wimpy case
308 Win.- boring
30-06- boring
7mm Mag- boring
300 Win Mag- redundant, buy a 30-06 and then be bored
444 Marlin- redundant, buy a 45-70 and have some fun
450 Marlin- see above

I'd have to see you guys on the .25 ACP.
Also have no desire for any of the Ultra Mags.
The same goes for most of the Weatherby Mags, but I am intrigued by the 257 Weatherby.
The short mags, I have not decided on. I can see why they may tend to be a bit more accurate, but I think the jury is still out. Yes, I have a 270 WSM on the way.

25 acp
380(However, the ammo has been avaliable so cheap, it might make me think about it)
357 Magnum
A lot of bark, but not enough bullet weight and diameter.
9mm
Don't like high pressure, and, one would think they could come up with a gun for it with a decent trigger pull, and tack driving accuracy for under 1500 dollars, Sig P210.
30-30 Lots of bang, and noise, not much down range.
44 special, because it's avaliable in so few guns, and, the ammo is so expensive...love the ballistics, though

Same thing pisses me off about the following cartridges:

44 mag, 45 colt,454, 475 and 500 Linebaugh,416 Rigby. Factory ammo is expensive because it's almost price fixed, not because of any reason. In other words, supply and demand, with monopoly price fixing involved.
Why is a 400 grain 416 cartridge twice as much as a 375 H&H cartridge, with nearly the same bullet and powder???

Rounds I like:
45 acp and 45 Super
44 mag/44 special
454 or heavy 45 colt
475 and 500 Linebaugh
458 Lott
416 Rigby
22 short
22lr
223
308
7.62x39
30-06
375 H&H
50 BMG
105mm works well on squirrels...
They all have a unique place, and value...

and I like the looks of the rem titanium and if I get one I rather it be 30-06 than 270 .

I doubt that most of these unliked rounds have ever been used to any extent by the "haters"...least they would know that there is not a lick of difference in any of them if the bullet gets stuck in the right place...

I have killed so many elk and deer with a 30-30 that it amazes me how someone cannot like them and I am sure they never killed much with it...Same with the 06, 270, 308, 300's (all of them)

Some may be more suitable than others under different circumstances...I would prefer a 30-30 to any cartridge in the Texas brush if I was fighting my way through that nasty stuff and I have...most shoot from stands and a 300 is probably better there.

I don't dislike any cartridge and all have a use..The 7 mag that is being condemed here is not one of my favorite calibers, I prefer the 06 or .270 but it sure as hell is an excellent long range killer of deer and elk and has proved its worth to lots of hunters world wide, it is the number one sellers of the bunch...I don't favor a 243 but have killed a lot of deer with one and wouldn't hesitate to use it again...

Just for the heck of it I kill my mule deer in my home state of Idaho every year with a 25-35 Win., a round many condem, but have NEVER used..which is the case on this very forum.

To condem such calibers as the 270, 7 mag, 06, 308, 7x57, 30-30, 300 Win. and a host of others is just plain folley and town talk.

Ray: the question is why you don't like em, and,
that doesn't mean they don't work.

I don't like 30-30 since I don't like 115 grain bullets, and lots of noise. Doesn't mean it doesn't work...

I look for the best value I can find, and the biggest bullet, SD, etc. in each different class, and try to keep my expenditures down...

Obviously some of you guys have no qualms about having 50 guns, but I would rather be real good with a couple, if that's possible, then have a bunch I don't know inside and out.

Same reason I try and use the same scope on my 22, 30-06, and 375: I don't want to be thinking about which scope I'm using if something is trying to run me down.

Not to say the things I don't like don't work, but I perfer others for certain reasons...
So do you, IIRC [Wink]

Doesn't mean we can't take a few pokes at the ones we don't like...

Sides, the quest for the 'perfect' cartridge is what makes all this stuff fun, and tuning it and arguing about it is likewise, an educational experience.

243 win Simply because I missed a lot of deer and coyotes when I was young, did not practice enough and rifle was not accurate, also because too light for deer on angling shots

Any Ultramags Simply because were duplications of other rounds and many users of such calibers tick me off.
375 H&H not really applicable to hunting in my
area.

7mm-08 because a real dork is always telling me its better than a 270

There's my rant

Wow, I am totally shocked by some of these responses. I like most all cartridges.
If I had to list some, I would just say the cartridges that don't offer anything substantial over earlier versions or over the version that became more popular or "the standard"
This would include most of the Weatherby Mags
The .222rem was first but the .223 won out over time.
The 6mm Rem lost out to the .243
The 30Rem lost to the 30-30
The .260Rem should Lose to the 6.5x55 (but won't)
Any 7mag should lose to the 7mm Rem Mag. (It's the Standard

Same for the 300 winny and it's ilk.

No use for anything Ultra-Mag.

Never Cared for the .38 Special (the 9mm Para won)
Never liked the 9mm Para -prefer the 40s&w & 45 ACP

Best I can do

Try the Wby 378 and 460 on the top of the list.

Followed by the 280 Rem, 7.62 x 39, and the 243 Win.

Though I have shot thousands of rounds in competition I just "hate" the .308. Stubby sawed off little runt pretending to be a 30-06. Yes, it is a great cartridge for competition or military use but in the game field I'd rather carry a spear! Now before someone leaps to the defense of this abomination I will admit that my dislike is utterly irrational and without any sensible merit whatsoever. I don't care! That's my opinion an' oughta be yours.
