Hi, while I live in Colorado Springs, my oldest son and I purchased 20 acres of land in Guffey, CO a year ago. Anyone hunt there? Suggestions?

Thanks!

Regards,

Chuck

Here are a few pictures:

View looking East/NorthEast:

Walking South:

Looking West:

North is going down the hill, same kind of view as looking East/North East. We're looking to buy the 20 acres due East as well includes a lot more trees. It borders an 18,000 acre ranch and we're planning to go meet the owners/caretakers and see about getting permission to hunt in trade for helping fix fences, herd stock, etc. this summer.

Follow up: We're psyched! Just found out I can get private land cow elk tags for this area. Season runs from Sept 1st to Jan 31st! I figure I'll get a tag each for my two sons (one will be in college, the other still in the Rangers so they can hunt on school vacation / leave), and get a bull tag for the early rifle season for myself.

Regards,

Chuck

It's darn pretty country.....If I was going to hunt it then I'd go the late season and hope for a lot of snow as the early season elk will most likely be higher up and with a lot of snow be driven down to the area you hunt. That's the bad part of having only a few acres.....the elk may only be there for a short period.

True, but my two boys won't be able to hunt during the "regular seasons". So I'll have to work my magic with the ranch owner bordering our property and get permission to hunt on his 18,000 acres.

Chuck

Eh....late seasons in that area are dicey at best, its either going to be 5ft of snow or 70 degrees lol.

Chuck,

Are you on the 581 or 58 side? Got curious since I have the new regs manual in front of me and it looks like Guffey is smack dab on the border of the two. Looks like a great area. I have seen elk/deer/bear not too far from there up at 11-mile, but I don't know way too much about the area. I do know, that is some tasty looking territory for some possible bruiser muleys.

I'm on the 581 side. I'm going to talk to the owner of the ranch bordering our property. It's 18,600 acres so it would be awesome.

Good idea, will do! I have some 270 Win Sierra 90g HPBT loads at 3400 fps that would be perfect for that.

Don't tell anyone but some of the biggest mule deer to have come out of Colorado in the last 5 years have come from units 58, 581 and north of there in the Hayman burn. Good luck.
