I met a fellow at a gun show who hunted Kodiak Island in the early fifties when he was in Alaska in the Air Force.

He used an M1 with the standard ball ammo. As he told it, it's good to be young and dumb and not aware that such a load was inadequate, otherwise the one shot he put through his bear broadside might not have rolled it down a hill, dead as can be, as happened when he shot it.
