If you have a choice of route to Yellowstone, I'd suggest going through Logan Canyon from Logan to Bear Lake...

The Grand Canyon is also quite nice; it's also 8000 feet elevation on the north side ( my favorite ) and might have snow in October.

Is late October still OK for a trip to Yellowstone, with a bit of hiking, or would Arches or one of the other desert parks/monuments be better at that time of year??

Hunting what: mule deer.

Late October in Yellowstone could easily be under a bunch of snow, or it could be sunny and 60 deg. Its a crapshoot. But if it is under snow then there is some fantastic snowmobiling to be enjoyed.

I reccomend a visit to the Grand canyon via Zion and Bryce natl parks. They are each breathtaking and relativley short distances from one another. And speaking of shooting craps, if youve never been there, Las Vegas is also a sight to behold and full of things to see and do as well and it is as close to SLC as yellowstone with Zion NP right on the way.

Good luck on the hunt. Are you going on private land or??

If you're on the north side of SLC, it may be as easy to come up to Wahsatch Shooters range in Centerville. Just head north on I-15, and take the 89 exit at Lagoon. The range is east of 89. There is a sign marking the turn. If you get to the water tank marked Layton Surf and Swim, you've come too far north. $5, concrete shooting tables, a canopy for shade, and real nice folks. Open Friday and Saturday in the winter, and a couple of other days of the week during nicer weather.

There's lots to see and do out here... we usually head south instead of north that time of year. If you do go north, Jackson Hole and the Tetons are worth the side trip.

Vegas is a Disneyland for adults, somehow gone horribly wrong. Worth the trip if you've never been there. Just remember, money people lost pays for the casinos and all the employees you see.

When we go down that way, we usually spend the night in Mesquite. Quite a bit cheaper. Try the Casablanca. There is a good sporting clays range in town.

If you're south, St. George and Cedar City are worth a tour.

There's a nice gun store in Beaver, and some nice outdoor areas east and west of there.

Might try a tour of some of the slot canyons.

Thanks for all the input guys, much appreciated!

TomP: I'll remember the advice about route to Yellowstone. Grand Canyon - good idea! I did not realize it was that close to SLC, never crossed my mind.

NE450, I will check with Aleko to see if he is in town when I'm there. If yes, he gets to buy me a cup of coffee as an old customer

Wstrnhntr: OK, I'll stay flexible and see what the weather dictates. In any event, the tip about Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce are well taken. I've actually never been to either (nor Yellowstone), so I guess GC is a great choice. Private or public land: guided on private. I wish I could say I was going on my own on public land, but realities of hunting in a different country make guided hunts a sensible option.

Deton: thanks for the directions to the Wahsatch Shooters range - one more option is always an advantage. I'll try hard to stay away from Vegas, my trip is going to be expensive enough as it is ... Will keep the gun store in Beaver in mind, if I pass along that way in the end.

Thanks again for all the good input!
