I got a big bodied mule deer yesterday morning, the rut is almost in full swing and the necks on these deer are huge. I would like to post some pictures and was hoping someone would help me. I can email the pictures if someone will post them for me.

The easiest way I have found to post pictures is to set up an account at a hosting site like www.photobucket.com and upload the pictures there. Once your photos are uploaded to the host site, copy the "img" code listed beneath your picture and paste it into your post. Should not take more than 5 to 10 minutes from start to finish.

Thanks cwilson!

Ok here are some of the pictures of my deer.

Deer 01
Deer 02
Deer 03
Deer 04
Deer 05

I know he isn't the biggest deer ever, but it took me 5 years to draw a buck tag in this area. He is only the second buck that I have ever taken since I was 18. I've taken five other deer since my first buck when I was 18 four have been does and I've failed to fill my other two buck tags I've drawn in the last 16 years. I took him with my Parker Hale .270 at 560 yards lazered and he only went another 20 yards from where he was shot. I definatly broke my rule of never shooting past 300 yards and when I think about it I was pretty foolish for even taking the shot. I got lucky and managed an almost perfect broad side shot 3" behind the front sholder and about 5" from the bottom of the rib cage. I'm happy with the results of the hunt but I definatly let "Buck Fever" get the best of me on the last day of my hunt on the Colorado Plains.

that's a heck of a deer! a 4x5 with eyeguards like that is trophy, for sure! he may not have a lot of width, but he sure is tall! and you're right, he really looks rutted up. his neck is HUGE!

good shooting, too!

Gun Control - A theory espoused by some monumentally stupid people; who claim to believe, against all logic and common sense, that a violent predator who ignores the laws prohibiting them from robbing, raping, kidnapping, torturing and killing their fellow human beings will obey a law telling them that they cannot own a gun.

Thanks for the compliments guys. He will be my first mount ever, and I'm looking forward to getting him back.

I had actually given up on hunting deer and was helping my Dad fix his round baler. We were headed down to the field to put a belt on when I spotted this deer in the neighbors pasture less than a half mile from Mom and Dads. I only took my rifle and orange as an after thought, in fact I was really hoping to spend the rest of the day calling coyotes.

I had thought I lost this very same buck and wouldn't see him again when he busted me earlier that morning when I was walking Dad's fields. I was folowing Dad to the field and had to call him on his cell phone to help me load my buck, I wasn't able to do it by myself. I couldn't ever pick him up high enough to get his front sholder to clear the pickup tailgate. I'm guessing he weighed over 350, I'm 5'10" and weigh 230 and he made me look small. This deer had been eating very good on the corn, milo, and hay fields, there is going to be a lot of fat to trim.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Hey Chad
Nice big buck you've got there!
Good shootin" too, anything approaching that distance is a long shot and takes a steady hand. You did well.
I'd like to see those horns sometime where are you getting him mounted?

Dave, I'm using Timberline Taxidermy to do the mount. I had the help of Stoney Point shooting sticks and a 3-12 power scope. To be honest I totaly missed with my first shot and didn't even see where it hit. The deer just stayed still long enough to give me a second shot and I got very lucky.

Chad I used Timberline for my Elk, Bighorn Sheep, Mountain Goat and a couple Antelope. They are good guys and a fair price, I might stop in and see your horns in a week or two when I'm not so darned busy. Take a look at my other post in this forum and see my 12 year old sons buck, not like yours but his first and he worked pretty hard for it. I'll head back up for Either sex elk hunts in a couple weeks.

Dave,
I hope your elk hunt goes better than mine. I was plagued by bad weather on the first day of the hunt and one of the guys in my party got hurt. We had to come down from the mountains after only six hours of hunting on the opening day. I had two cow and a bear tag go unfilled this year and I was hunting between Craig and Meeker, so this shouldn't have happened. I hope your son's luck continues this year.
