Alright, guys, here's a serious question that might be fun for you guys to answer. I'm in college right now, and I've decided hunting is what I love to do, so I'm going to pick a place to live according to that. I know where I can find a job is more important, but I'm not quite that far yet, so we'll cross that bridge when it comes. I've lived in PA my whole life, we can hunt deer, bear, and small game around here, and while I enjoy it, I'd rather go somewhere that I could hunt more big game species. I'd also like to be within driving distance of a few other states so I could get into other state's draws as well as where ever I live (if there is a draw there). I hope you guys understand what I'm asking, but if you were in my shoes, where would you go?

Just a tad more info there Justin. What is your major and what kind of work do you plan on taking up for your vocation. If you are a stock broker it wouldn't do for you to go to Idaho, if you get my drift. Tom Purdom

I'd look into CO, ID, WY, MT for starters. I would avoid AK if it was me. I have quite a few friends that live up there, and they all say the same thing... it costs alot of money to hunt or fish for anything... not nearly as much as it does for a NR, but not much less either. I can hunt elk in three states for what my buddy is shelling out for a DIY moose hunt. BUT you can hunt sheep, moose, griz and what ever else every year... but my bet would be on average you might get 10 days in the field and on a good year maybe 14... I don't know about you but thats about 30 short for me. Wink

Good luck in your quest. I wish I was in your shoes...

If I picked a place purly on the hunting around the area and being relativitly central to some other states with good hunting opertunities. I'd probably say Salt Lake City UT, Grand Junction CO, or Idaho Falls/Pocatello ID. I think Idaho would be my first pick. From any of these you could access Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona most likely within a days drive. All have great hunting areas.

Reno, NV. The economy is good, plenty of hot young women, houses are affordable.

Hard to draw resident tags, but you're surrounded by states with enough opportunities to keep you very busy.

Northern New Mexico, western Colorado, much of Utah, Wyoming, western Montana, and Idaho have their charms. Alaska is awesome but it's still a hard land and its seasons are not for everyone. Whichever you choose, just do it. Finish school there if you can. Make it happen. Otherwise life will happen to you while you are making other plans and you'll end up picking the state you and your wife want to retire in. Why not live year round for the next 40 years where most of us dream of visiting a for couple weeks every year?

Idaho is out of the question....in order to hunt you have to drive 2-3 hours; most of the game is gone (wolves I guess); there are hardly any women here; there is no money, no jobs and no housing. The scenery sucks and were bordered by 6 states and a (province?)

Now WYOMING-----> (or Montana...or Colorado....or Utah) thats where you want to be! They got all the hunting, women, booze, jobs, money, land and opportunity you could ever want!

Montana, Wyoming, or Colorado. All three states are excellent. You have a solid plan in life. Good luck with it!

Well, guys, I wish I could tell you what I'm going for in school, but I'm not really sure myself! Razzer Right now I'm in secondary education, but my parents are both teachers and they are trying to talk me out of it. I know they don't have to live with my decision, I do, but I'm thinking my dad might know something I don't about the necessity to go to work when hunting season is in. So for once, I might listen to the old man! I've been thinking about going into business, since that's pretty open, I'm just not sure how apt I would be to get a job with a degree in that field. I've also thought about going into real estate, so maybe you could help point me in the right direction there, Mark.

As you guys can see, I'm a confused young man, lol. I'm just in my first year of college, though, so I have some time to make up my mind. I'm also thinking that if I decide that there is one place for me to go, I might try and pick a major that I enjoy AND something that I could get a job in the area of my choice. Thanks for the opinions, so far, though, guys, keep them coming.

Wyoming, Colorado, Neveda, Idaho, Montana. All beautiful states. But if you look in the middle of all those states, sits UTAH. Elk, Mule Deer, Whitetail, Antelope, Bear, coyotes, rabbits (best year in many a year). It's central location allows you to put in for as many hunts as you can afford. Doves, Ducks, Grouse, Geese, Phesants, Chuckers and more.....
All you need is time off and money......... Good luck........

You might thing about a career in Hotel/Restaurant management. You can then live in some of the most beautiful areas of the world, and make you pick according to the hunting.

Strangely enough, the one occupation that allows you to live almost anywhere in the US and pays relatively well is Truck driving. A Class A CDL and some experience is all that's needed.

It's not for everyone however.
