I'm looking to do my first self-guided hunt for either deer or elk in Wyoming and was wondering if anyone had recommendations for areas that offer good access and reasonable odds of getting a nice bull/ buck. I'm not trophy hunting, just looking to get out West for a backpack hunt. I hunt bow, muzzleloader or rifle. Whatever weapon gets me out there. I have a few units in mind after looking at the mule deer/ elk harvest reports from 2009 which I found at Wyoming game and fish website. Also, should I be purchasing a preference point this year? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. that which doesn't kill me is only postponing the inevitable...

Plenty of public land for a DIY antelope, elk, or deer hunt in Wyoming. Definitely buy a PP for any or all three of those animals between now and 9/30 (elk-$50, deer-$40, antelope-$30)

Half of Wyoming is public land, so lots of access. You might need to apply for a year or two to draw. Buy your point. If archery is good for you try an archery only limited draw area. Other wise, your rifle permit allows you to bow hunt early then hunt with your rifle later. All you need is to buy an archery license.
