I hunt some pretty steep country but never had to make that decision yet! You must be climbing trees to look straight down at them. If I were in that situation and that close to the animal and if I cared not about the trophy I'd head shoot them for sure. Clean and no meat wasted.

a friend of mine was actually presented with this shot when we were teenagers. the area he was hunting in has cliffs that look straight down on a creekbed and he encountered a buck that he shot from straight above. the bullet went through the withers and imbedded into ice.
Right between the shoulder blades. I have done this 6-7 times. One of the high tree stands we use for whitetail on a side hill has presented this shot many times over the years. Spine,lungs,heart-usually all three when you use heavy slugs at short range. I always avoid head shots, not sporting. If you miss by just a few inches you could leave a terribly wounded animal to suffer.

Right between the shoulder blades. My first buck I killed with a black powder rifle was killed this way. Came in underneath the oak stand I was hunting right at last light. I had a doe and fawn also feeding under the stand so I had to move at a snail's pace and he made it under the tree before I was in position. Dropped him in his tracks! It was actually one of the most awkward shots I've ever taken.
