I was skeptical at first, but I found the Colorado's Parks and Wildlife's new on-line big game application system, to be extremely easy to navigate and put in your license applications.

I applied for deer, antelope, and bear and it took me less than 15 minutes.

It helps if you write down the codes for each species you want to hunt.

Even better, is that you are only charged the $3.00 application fee for each specie when you apply, and only have to pay for the license if you are drawn.

I think you can still apply by telephone if you don't have access to the internet, or aren't computer savvy.

+1

Being 66 and set in my ways, I too was skeptical. My wife and I sat down the other night and completed applying for deer, antelope and elk. As you said, took maybe 10-15 minutes. Super easy compared to posting photos on AR!! Confused

And wow! Isn't it great to only have to pay for the $3 application charge? Doesn't keep your money in holding for two to four months waiting for the draw. If one includes moose, goats, etc. as I have done in the past, it adds up to a small chunk of change! I paid a total of $12 for all of my tags I applied for.

Only downside is, I have just one MORE password to memorize in my life. Hope I can remember that a year from now when I apply again. Like many my age, I can't remember what I had for breakfast this morning. Frowner

That is if you did not purchase an annual hunting license for any species in the prior year. A small game license qualifies. It's a way to charge you a hefty amount for the privilege of eventually accumulating enough points to hunt the species you wish in the place you wish. Should you live so long.

WOW!
Hard to believe they've changed things since I hunted last 6yrs ago. (health)

Used to be we had to send in the full amount and if not drawn months later. They'd refund all except the $3 fee.

Don't know about the $40, need to go look myself.

I plan on doing my Applications this week so I have no comment on the ease of the new system, I for one think that many more people will get in the game now that there is no front money with them using your funds for months on end.
My only hope is that many of the newcomers will make mistakes with their payment method and more tags will end up as leftovers after the draw when folks fail to update their credit card info or are over their limit etc.
I do have one complaint, as a father of a teenager I find it odd that the state now requires a unique email address for every applicant. I would think there would be an exception for minors. The last thing I want is for the CPW to contact my minor child to make a decision about a mistake or potential clarification on an application, ridiculous.

I believe that every year to avoid the point "fee" you have to have some kind of license for that year, big game hunting, small game hunting or fishing.

As a CO resident this year, this is how my application process broke down:

habitat stamp: $10
Deer: $3
Elk: $3
Moose: $3
Goat: $3
Pronghorn: $3
RMBighorn: $3.

total, $28 not bad! I will get a leftover deer draw list and get an OTC archery elk tag if i do not draw my 2nd choice mz tag.

took me all of 15 minutes to do. finding the page to take you to where you have to create your unique login/password took more time than actually applying for tags.

On one hand I enjoy not sending the state a grand until June, on the other this is not going to help with point creep...

Between myself my wife and two kids we used to have to throw down almost $3K in application fees every year as residents just to apply. Now it's like $40 per person and you only pay if you draw the tag.

This is a double edges sword though. I think a lot more people are going to start applying making it even tougher to draw a decent tag. Time will tell.
