Soon much of my time will be spent in the Northern Minnesota area. My wife takes many trips back to help her mother take care of a verity of tasks. My question is "can my wife take a firearm of mine back to Minnesota for my future use, and legally store it at a relatives house until my arrival?" My idea is to get several of my "Midwest" guns back to where I will use them at the rate of one per trip via my wife.

Would this be a legal possibilty?

If shev is transporting them by personal vehicle, I do not know that there would be a problem.

If flying, not sure how that would/will work out.

Travel would be by commercial airline. My biggest concern.

Then there will be problems.

As some folks suggested on a recent discussion I started, look into shipping the guns to a contact in the area where you will be hunting.

I know it can be done, but I do not know how it works or the potential problems.

No issue legally what so ever. She can fly them just fine. You can also ship from yourself to yourself in care of the recipient. All completely legal.

Why would there be a problem? You don't need a 4457 for domestic travel. As long as the firearms are in a secure hard case with locks, you will be fine.

As SKB said you can also mail them to yourself in care of another person. If you are mailing a handgun, you must use Fed Ex or UPS as the USPS won't take handguns to a non ffl.

Google "mailing firearms" on the BATF site.

Ammo must be in a separate case and can't exceed 5kg, IIRC.

Do a little research. CHC is not correct.

Not correct, but he upped his post count again and will probably now come back with some kind of stupid retort, LOL!

Don't seem like there'd be any problems with her taking a couple in a gun case locked and declared. "Hey, I'm going hunting back there".

How is what I said below all that different from what you said in the above quote?

I fly domestic with firearms and have never had a problem.

Just make sure you check the "traveling with firearms" rules for the airline she will be flying and also the TSA's rules. These change from time to time so I always go to the respective websites and read the latest versions.

Make sure you wife knows how to ensure the rifle is unloaded as she may have to explain this to the clerk at the counter.

As soon as I get to the airport, I inform an airline agent that I am flying with a firearm. They will then direct you to the correct line for getting the firearm checked in properly.

She might have to then escort the cased gun to a TSA check point for firearms. Make sure she has the keys for opening the gun case.

At the destination, the gun cases will usually be sent to the oversized pick up, or some other pick location, never the luggage carousel.

I hope this helps.

Easiest way is to send the firearms to yourself C/O someone else as has been suggested. It's not that expensive and will save your wife any additional hassles when she flies. Order an inexpensive plastic case from Cabela's or similar to ship the guns. If you want a little more security use FedEx who I've had great luck with for shipping guns.

With virtually all of the airlines (other than Southwest) charging $50 to $100 for each checked bag, shipping your guns would likely be cheaper than sending them as baggage with an air traveler. It will also greatly simplify your wife's life and promote serenity in your marriage, otherwise known as "domestic tranquility".

I got this from the UPS website.

******************************************
Special Procedures for Shipping Firearms
UPS accepts packages containing firearms (as defined by Title 18, Chapter 44, and Title 26, Chapter 53 of the United States Code) for transportation only (a) between licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers, and licensed collectors (as defined in Title 18, Chapter 44 of the United States Code), and government agencies and (b) where not otherwise prohibited by federal, state or local law (i) from an individual to a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector; and (ii) from a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to an individual.

The shipper must comply with and must ensure that each shipment containing firearms complies with all federal, state and local laws applicable to the shipper, recipient, and package, including, without limitation, age restrictions.

********************************************
Although some of the gun websites state that an individual can mail a firearm to themselves in care of another individual, I didn't see that in the UPS websites.

Just saying.

If you drop your wife off at the airport she would not even have to worry about it - you could handle the check in and TSA inspection. There are no customs issues as you are not leaving the country so you do not need any paperwork (4457). She would just pick it up on the other end, usually at the special baggage area but I've had them just come out on the carousel...

Yes it is a checked bag but only one way...

I have shipped my trap gun to an FFL dealer near a gun club before when I did not want to carry it with me - they normally charge a nominal fee to handle it but shipping it can be as much as a checked bag...

FedEx has no such requirement. I print a label from the FedEx website, put it on the box and drop it at the FedEx store about 400 yards from my home. If you don't live near a FedEx store they will pick it up from you. No questions about package content.

I do it all the time, have for 40 plus years..I always carry a copy of the airlines regulation on my person..Many ticket takers are ignorant as hell and many are anti gun liberals...If you have any kind of a problem call for their supervisor and show him his own regs...Even the meanest of airport officials will make excuses and back down and say something stupid like OK I'll let you pass this time..Thats when I tell them to kiss ole spot, get their name and tell them the gun better get to my destination or there will be hell to pay....
