What do you think happened with this whitetail? Glancing shot? Bullet failure?

Buck wound

I'm trying out imgur as Photobucket has become a nightmare.

Without looking at the other side it's hard to guess. Could be a bullet or arrow wound, could be a wound from fighting during the rut. He is dinged up on his shoulder as well.

I saw a whitetail shot that was rutting does hard.
When we got up to him we saw green puss running out of both sides of his neck. He had been shot with a muzzle loader at some point during the late season and he kept right on trucking.
The mule deer I killed this year during the rifle season had a big crease across his back. Looked like someone just gave him a little too much elevation during archery season. The wound was scabbed up pretty hard but when we peeled the scab off you could see the slit plainly.
They are tough animals.
Looks like you've got a good spot though. Nice buck.

My GUESS, is injuries are from the rut. I have seen similar wounds on other deer.

Rut wounds is my guess.

I shot a buck a few years back he was all messed up with holes poked all over his front end had to cut a bit of meat away.

Just about impossible for that rib wound to be from a bullet from the other side and still be alive. Does look like an exit wound, most likely a horn stuck him.

Friend just killed a WT in the SE corner of CO. The L main beam was broken off about 6" up, the R brow tine broken 3" up. Teeth worn down to the gums. Meat from the tender loins was sure good, gave me a pkg. Would have been a nice sized 4pt/8pt E count.

Just read in a Bugle mag, many elk end the rut with 40-60 puncture wounds. Guess they want the goodies more than I do.

It's amazing what animals can endure. I saw a caribou walking strangely once, put the binoculars on him/her and it was walking on three legs. The fourth had been almost shot off at the hock and the remainder was dangling below it. From the distance it didn't look like it was bleeding and it hobbled with little apparent effort up the side of a steep hill and over the top. Amazing.

Any other ideas for photo posting besides photo bucket? The ads are absolutely hideous.

I am open to suggestions as well. Someone on here had mentioned that they use Hunt101 but it seems that their website is having issues, or is not allowing new users to register.

My best guess it was from fighting.
I had a friend shoot a really large 10 pointer who had 2 infected puncture wounds in its left rear leg, punctures where about 5 or 6 inches apart indicating a spike or another buck with long brow pegs. My brother in law shot a little 6 pointer who came charging in to rattling and scent, he killed it but the deer had a broad head wound acouple inched from his spine with the exit wound in its arm pit, apparently someone shot straight down on him and it did nothing but flesh damage plus the deer was looking to either fight or breed

Here are a couple pixs of a deer my buddy shot in 2013, this buck was chasing a doe and had a horrendous wound in it muzzle which was totally healed meaning it probably shot in years past, after looking at it closely I am convinced that it was shot with a shotgun slug on its left side removing its nose and part of its sinus structure but leaving its upper palate in tack allowing it to eat. Notice the missing skin and how it fused to the skull. Not only that the buck had a heavily infected hind quarter from a recent 22 lead bullet. These deer are amazing and their survival instinct are beyond our comprehension

Raamw, That is the second deer I have seen like that. My buddy shot one on his property back in 92 that look very close to that one.

This is why i've always stayed away from taking head shots.
