My friend just sent me the first issue of the magazine that he is the editor of called "Hunting the West." If you are from the western half of the US, you will appreciate the content. By the title, you can figure out that it's about hunting the western states of the US and western Canada. Included in this is a good portion of blacktail hunting! Finally a magazine that is going to cover this on a regular basis. Also included is Elk, Antelope, Sheep, Bears, Goats, Cougar, Coyotes, and birdshooting as well. Even if I didn't know the editor, I would still think that this is one of the better North American hunting magazines. If you have the opportunity, I recommend you check it out.

After I posted this here, I realized that maybe I should have posted it in the "books and videos" section...sorry.

Nope, it's perfect posted here because,

Black-tailed deer hunting does not get the respect it deserves. Everybody whines about having to draw for the best muley tags in the West but the best blacktail tags are the over the counter zones in CA, OR and WA. And in CA I'm allowed two tags Big Grin

And you can hunt on millions of acres of public lands, which vary in productivity depending on your knowledge, physical condition and ability to actually 'hunt'. Because it really is hunting, as opposed to harvesting.

In my experience the biggest bucks are generally taken off USFS lands and not private lands. Though it's far easier to take bucks on the ranches or private timberlands if you have access.

Speaking of species that get no respect, how about some articles on Roosevelt's elk? Everything I can find is written on Rocky Mountain elk.

Well you're in luck...they are also going to be doing a lot of articles on Roosevelt Elk. In the premier issue, Scott writes an article with tips on hunting Roosevelts.

I really do feel like this magazine fills in a lot of the gaps that many magazines have out there.

I'm waiting for the copy to arrive that Scott mailed to me. So I haven't seen it yet, but I know Scott Haugen as a hardworking writer/editor, and more recently also TV-host. I'm looking forward to seeing what he came up with.

Just finished reading the Premier Issue. It is very good, of course I'm a bit biased as they had quite a few articles featuring Montana in it. BTW okie, they have an article featuring the Roosevelt elk. In fact very well rounded mag, covering nearly all western big game critters.
