Planning a Moose hunt in Newfoundland this year, and would appreciate some advise. I have taken 2 Moose with a .338, but would like to try a different caliber. What is you feeling about a 7mm RUM using a 160 grain Nosler Partition at about 3200fps? This is a sub MOA load in my rifle. All shots would be limited to 200 yards max.
Any help would be appreciated

Moose takes big medicine to put down, from what I hear, but there's no reason 160 grs of Partition in the heart/lungs won't kill it.

You'd be limited on the angles you could choose, though.

I use 7mag on my moose hunts. You are not undergunned on newfie moose with the 160gr partition although you couldnt go wrong with the 160 XLC. The moose tend to be bigger here in B.C. and because of the possibility of a brute I use 175 gr. bullets.

I really don't think that it matters much if your load is shooting 1/2", 1", or 1-1/2"(or even more) at 100 yrds when you dealing with moose. It's a big animal and you have plenty of inches for error. Performance is the main concern.

Good luck on the rock! [Big Grin]

Tweesdad
Rain...be ready to be wet,possibly frozen,early
could be warm.
Hike alot...Newfie guides walk alot.Unless you
are on a large lake and want to troll the shore.
Don't shoot the first bull, there are some fair
bulls to be had.And there are alot of moose on
the island.
Good boots, tight fitting. The newfie tundra is
like a sponge, pulls at your feet all day.
I would take the 338 if it shoots good.
The 7mm will kill any moose dead.
Long shots are a real possibility.I would want
to be able to shoot to 300 yards.
Layer clothes you will be cold and hot.
Have fun,it is a good time.

Thanks guys. Like I said, I have already taken 2 Newfie Moose with a .338. My longest shot was at 70 yards or so. Although I don't think there would be a problem locating one at 300 yards or so, I think there would be one hell of a problem in getting a shot through the trees at that range.
Thank for the advise on the weather. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. I really can damn near drown you. That is the main reason I want to take the RUM. (stainless)
Well, it looks as though the decision is going to be all mine, and I think I would still like to try the 7mm.
Any other bullet ideas? I am not really married to the Nosler.
Thanks again

I don't consider Moose that tough of an animal (My experience has been with Shiras Moose). They seldom drop in their tracks, but they seldom travel far. I've never heard of anyone who has lost a Moose after injuring it. I believe anything larger than a 7x57 ought to work fine.

Speaking as a guy who grew up on moosemeat, I shot herds of 'em with .308s, .270s, '-06s and .338s. I'm sure your 7mm Whatzit will do just fine. [Wink] My old Dad shot even bigger herds of 'em with a .38-55, and they all ended up on the table. One thing I can tell you for sure is that for good eating, they shouldn't know they've been shot - if you kill then stone dead in their tracks, there's no better meat. If you shoot pieces off of 'em, and chase them across hells half acre, they're going to be stinky...which is why some guys say moose meat tastes 'wild'. Just sneak up on him, and tuck a bullet in behind his ear, and you'll have a freezer full of good eating. If you shoot them in the heart, they'll run about 50 yards and go over backwards damn near every time!

As far as bullets go, the only disappointment I ever had was with some abomination called a 'Ballistic Tip'....what can I say, they seemed like a good idea at the time! [Razz]

Tweesdad, a 7mm magnum of any flavour should be ok. If it was me, I would probably go with a 175 grain Swift A-Frame provided your rifle likes them.

JeffP got some very good, often overlooked points covered. I train dawgs so I should be in shape when the season is... [Roll Eyes] Our typical moose hunt here is with stopping dawgs, longer shots are seldom needed so I ended up with 45-70 Marlin,400 grain cast. 150 yds max, usually 50 or shorter.

They drop good! [Smile]

For longer shots in "field sniping hunt" I go with 338 Lapua,300 grainers.

Our moose are big and tough. Most of them are taken with a 308,I just happen to like the extra confidence a bigger boolit gives. So do the moose.Bears are around, too.

But bullet placement is everything after all. A bad shot gives you exercise until the next morning and you hear about it for the rest of your life -here,at least. In a friendly way but still... hey, always shoot when the moose is not moving unless you are really close.

Have fun, moose hunt is what keeps my life worth living! [Big Grin]

With Moose you missed the big question, that is the size of the gun and the power of the cartridge is determined by exactly who is going to carry it out....??, I was lucky my 375 dropped it in its track and I had a 1/2 mile back to the water.
