I cannot make sense of why a unit had a "Total Quota" of 25 tags and then had 150 left over permits?? Just by looking at the 2008 Drawing Odds Report, I'd say my son and I are not going to go antelope hunting in Wyoming next fall (No preference points).
I am trying to talk him into something else, but he has his heart set on a Wyoming pronghorn hunt. Which areas have plenty of public land and good numbers of goats? Not looking for trophies...just success on the draw and a fair shot at game.
Thanks

With out knowing the area you are talking about it is hard to say. There has to be a logical answer. Maybe a misprint? 25 any antelope tags, and 150 leftover doe/fawn tags, maybe? Look for areas with lots of public land, and high numbers of tags. You could apply, to get your point, then also try to draw a doe/fawn tag in the same area to go and learn the area for the next trip when you draw an any antelope tag. First trip would be less expensive and give you more insight to where to hunt.
Kudu, I never have even bothered looking at NR information until I saw this post, but looking at last yrs draw results I was amazed! Looked to me if you had no pref points you would have better luck playing pick up sticks with your buttcheeks than pulling a NR goat tag for a decent area, odds change dramatically if one has pref points tho.

Born to Hunt: I haven't looked at Wyoming's draw results lately, but a few years ago Unit 32, just south of Casper, was a good bet. Decent drawing odds and good amounts of public land, including some cooperative land areas where you could hunt on private land as long as you obtained a free permit (available online through Wyoming Game & Fish Hunters Access Program). Antelope numbers were decent back in 2004, despite the drought.
Another area with lots of public land that had good odds was just northeast of Douglas, Unit 27.
My DIY Wyoming antelope hunt was probably the highlight of my hunting career and I really hope to make it back sometime.
Thanks, Dad, for taking me into the Great Outdoors.

Wyoming has a non-resident draw first, and then a month or two later, they do the resident draw. The odds shown are for the non-resident draw. There are often tags left over after the resident draw, available in a second chance drawing. These are the left-overs you are referring to, I believe. These tags can be purchased by non-residents or residents. A little confusing, but there are opportunities to draw a non-resident tag without preference points. In general, the areas near Buffalo / Sheridan have plenty of tags, and lots of goats. Not necessarily the best trophy quality, but great hunting for good goats.
Good Luck,
Bill

I have not drawn an antelope tag in 7 years! And I am a resident! Antelope is still my favorite to hunt and eat. I think this year I will put in for doe/fawn tags so I can put a couple in the freezer!
i believe i've read recently that they have done away with the leftover draw and now these leftover licenses are being sold by "licensing agents" in the area. a call to the wy. game and fish will clear it up for you, good luck

PM me if you want to come to MT and hunt some speed goats. We have a few areas with good draw odds and alot of antelope. I am not a professional guide, but would be happy to help you out.

The areas around Pinedale and Big Piney have lots of goats, and often lots of leftover doe-fawn tags.. mostly public land.. I live in 89, and draw a buck tag about every other year. PM me if you draw and I'll fill you in on spots.. Les

I think what you're seeng with the 25 tags/150 left overs is 25 buck tags, and the rest fawn/doe tags. Its just easier to wait until they release the left over tags and buy one of those, then you KNOW where you can and can not get a tag. I plan on picking up a left over doe/fawn tag this summer seeing as WY 'lope season is before CO's. And the doe/fawn tags are dirt cheap, even for NR

Born to Hunt, Look at the areas that have type 2 buck tags available for them. They usually open later than the type one tags and are eaiser to draw.
Les, Wish I could draw area 89 again, but one point won't do it for a non res. Shot some nice antelope in that area. I may put in for area 90 across the road and wish for luck.
