The .223 is legal here in KY for deer...legal, but in my book unethical. He has been shooting a Chipmunk .22 for a couple of years. My dad bought this rifle for him so, I can't have him take it back. However, his first deer hunt will be with my .243 Win. He can handle the recoil. He shoots a Remington 20 ga. shotgun with mag loads ok.
Snakelover: How old was your son when he stopped using the patch? My son just turned 9 and I've been told that after age 9 or so the lazy eye problem can be helped very little with patching.

My son has a very lazy left eye. He is right handed and shoots right handed. His right eye is 20/40 with corrective lenses. He just rec'd a Partner single shot .223 for his birthday. What scope would you recommend for 200 yard and closer shooting? I'm looking hard at Nikon's 44 mm scopes.

I am not sure how just poor 20/40 is, but if its a real concern you might want to speak to a friendly optician first. For instance a scope with an AO might be of more use to him than a person with average sight....

I guess I didn't state the question very well, but you are on the right track. I know that he will need the maximum amount of eye relief. My dad wants to get him a Leupold VX III 6.5-20. I think a 4-14 or so would be plenty.

Oh Lordy! Don't burden him with a scope so powerful. The eye placement is much more critical and less forgiving, and the higher power/lower field of view make them much less practical for hunting.
The plain old 3-9x is way plenty (as is a 2-7). The VX-I is a huge bargain, especially for a beginning shooter, and will give you 99% of the performance of the more expensive scopes.

With the rifle being in .223 are we talking a varmint rig something to use on ground hogs, coyotes, crows. If this is the case hell do ok with a high end scope like the 6.5X, I have that scope on my Savage 93 .17HMR. Now if we are talking a deer rifle (heaven forbid I know that caliber is legal in some places) then he would be better served by a quality 3X9.
