I'm going to do a DIY elk hunt in Unit 54 in CO next year. I'm going to put in for a first season tag and hope to get drawn, if I don't I will hunt it 2nd season OTC.

I will be backpacking in, so I know that I'm going to have to get far enough back to get past the guys that are hunting near the road or returning to their vehicles every night.

Any tips for hunting that unit or where in the unit I should be focusing my efforts to look for a 300" bull (or as close to 300"+ as I can get!).

If you're in good shape, I would pack in as far as you figure you can get an elk packed out if you down one. I'm not knowledgeable on the unit, but more and more younger guys are going way back in areas and there are more people in an area than you might figure there will be.

We hunted towards Rainbow Lake which is north of Blue Mesa Lake west of Gunnison. Dependent upon the weather, elk could be between the two lakes in the sage flats. However, when hunting the two early seasons, I would bet the elk are still up higher in the West Elk Wilderness. There is a trailhead at Rainbow Lake that will take you into the wilderness.

Another location is further west in the Red Rock or Red Creek area, can't remember which it is, but it is Red something.

Finally, I'd look further east over by Crested Butte. I've never hunted that area, but the last time I hunted 54 they said there was more elk in that area than where we were hunting, which was about 6 years ago.

Hope that helps.

Have you considered hiring a packer to take you into the West Elk Wilderness? I considered hunting unit 54 some time back, and that was how I was going to go. They can pack you in, and once you have a bull, they can pack it out.
