How do you measure buffalo? Tip to tip, base to tip, etc.? What makes a trophy bull?

I am told it it from tip to tip. Now if that is not correct I’m sure we have someone that can shed light on the correct method.

B&C measures the length of each horn, and then the mass 4x/side

Merry Christmas! And thanks for such a great write up. I too have wanted to do this for a long time.

Do you mind my asking what the cost to have the hide tanned is running you? Not only do I like the appeal of a freezer full of delicious meat, I would want the hide as well, for the bed, a blanket, whatever the mood decides that day. Smiler

Originally I thought about going with my Marlin 45/70 but if the shots are that far I think it'll be my 35 Whelen AI.

Thank you again

Red

Not at all. It runs about $26/square foot with the hair on. I left a deposit and will send the balance when it is ready to ship.

If I had had more confidence with my .45-110 Sharps I would have used that but....

Happy New Year to you and all the rest of the forum members.

Well done. On my list to try as well!
Thanks for sharing.

I think the number of pricks to good guys runs about 500 to 1 on this forum. Unfortunately, the one prick showed up.

Normally I would just blow them off or go back toe to toe but I had just got in, was tired and just didn't care. Not the first time with him. Should have put on the ignore list before now.

Has some buffalo chili last night. Really enjoying the spoils so to speak.

First I've been back to this thread.
Dave, hope you didn't take that wrong what I asked.
I've read of others shooting buff's and claims of
"like shooting a cow in the pasture". After reading your report it don't sound much different than elk or deer hunting when spotting game and making a stalk.

Damned fine looking animal. I was surprised it didn't weigh more. But, like elk, they're skinny side to side and heavy up n down so not as heavy as they look. Still figured it would weigh more.

It don't take much of a steer to weigh 1200#, we butchered a lot of 'em on the ranch about that size. Glad you got the fine meat and hide coming. You going to mount the head too? Glad you had such a good time and collected a fine animal.

George, no problem with you at all. The head is going to get done in a European style skull mount.

i'm glad to see this post is back up, thanks for posting.

My pops and I are looking to do a hunt together this coming year, and bison is high on the list among wyoming archery elk, alberta moose, etc...

I have a few outfitters saved to contact, i will add yours to the list.

do you think an archery hunt is feasible on the hunt you went on?

Dave, you're killing me with the bison chili. I, too, would like a robe tanned hair-on, and a bare skull mount. This is iconic Americana at its best.

Can't wait for them to be done. Wife gave me wall space for them in the bedroom.

Don't think there is 1 ounce of beef in the house and won't be for some time to come.

I have a couple of reall nice huge buffalo soft tanned hair on robes..I might trade one for a nice rifle or what have you...They sure are nice in the stands at a football game or rodeo in Idaho when the temp is down and the snow is falling and the wind is 20 plus MPH..
