Had my elk had a herart attack?
FInally shot my elk on Christmas evening. While field dressing her we noticed a black spot on her heart. it was about 1 inch in diamter and I beleive on the top portion of the heart. We were thinking it was either from a past heart attack or stroke, she was pretty old. Any ideas?

Kind of hard to say what it was but it wasn't evidence of heart attack. A past/healed heart attack leaves scar tissue in the muscle of the heart. I do post-mortem inspection on cattle for the USDA and have seen many of these.

On an old animal, it might have been a melanoma, a type of tumor. They can occasionally be found on the heart.

I hope you checked the liver, too.

No we didn't check the liver. Is there reason for concern (is the meat possibly tainted?

Spots on the liver are tell tail signs of disease.

The meat from your elk could be dangerous. For your own safety, package it carefully in dry ice and ship it to me. I'll do a careful inspection, and if necessary, actually sample some of the meat to see if it kills me. If I survive, I'll let you know how it tastes.

Yea, maybe the elk was an alcoholic.

I never knew the kind hearted people we had on this forum. Even to thepoint of testing other people's potentially tainted meat. Alas I can't in good conscience let someone else endanger themselves for me liike that so I'll have to take that chance myself maybe tonight.
