Just wondering about all the fanfare over the QD scope systems. It all Seems justified because the market is flooded with them. I would like to take a pole of folks who have QD scope systems on guns and have actually been forced to use it. I know that it allows for safer transportation. I'm talking about having to resort to open sights ------------------

Never been "forced" to use the QD feature, but I have exercised the option on numerous occasions. I am not experienced with dangerous game, but if QD were a necessity, I would think Saeed would have his rifles prepped this way. Or perhaps he simply has numerous rifles available?! ~Holmes

Not necessary, but nice. They have advantages and uses beyond allowing access to the open sights. I like to remove the scope when I clean a rifle. Also, having the scope on a QD system allows you to take a spare scope, already sighted in, having its own rings installed, ready to fit into the bases on the rifle, so that you can simply take one scope off and slip the spare or replacement on the rifle if needed. I've used a QD system (EAW) on my moose rifle since I bought it 18 years ago. It has served me well. I've normally taken it off if the spot where I hunted was very dense, younger forest with lots of "bush", or if it was a "tight spot", ie a forest road. I also like the ability to remove the scope for cleaning, as mentioned above, without the need to sight the rifle/scope in again. Since I like irons, I do want the easy option for irons on my big-game rifles and the easiest way to get this is with a QR-system. Just my HO. Bear Claw, I use them mainly as you said for transportation and to have a back up scope on a remote hunt. Few of my rifles have open sights, but all of them have QD bases and rings. Most are Talleys, with one Burgess and a few Warnes. Chic Worthing

Customstox, your post comes at the right time. I have been inquiring some time ago about the change of POI after pacing the cope back on.I believe Talley is quoting somethin like 3/8" at 100y.Do you have any numbers or experience in that regard? appreciate advice sheephunter

With the quality of the scopes today, I don't really think they are necessary. But, they are nice. I like to take the scope off and just plink sometimes. Granted these are light rifles- .243, .308, .30-06 I like the "complete" look the iron sights lend to certain rifles like Mausers and Winchester 70s. The rifle also seems to have different handling characteristics without the scope and that's interesting to experience every once in a while... The one time I needed irons was when the reticle in my old Bushnell 2.5x succumbed to .30-06 recoil on my Springfield Express and the gun didn't have them...

I damaged a scope on Safari to South Africa last year. I had followed the advice of JJHack and a couple other posters here and brought a spare scope in QR rings, already sighted in. I just changed scopes and was back hunting in no time at all. With standard rings, this could have been a real problem. - Sheister

Bearclaw, I use warne QD's on my M70 .338 that I used as a back up gun while guiding hunts. The warne rear base has a low profile peap sight on it. I like the system very much. I only use this sysem for this particular rifle. It spends alot of time on bush planes, horses, boats and snowmobiles. I had a leather scabard built to carry the scope. This is a reliable system that I trust. The whole idea behind the QD system(for me anyways)is to be able to transport the gun with out the scope attached. I carry the scope in a safer place. I can list many examples and instances where if I had my scope on my rifle it would have been fucked or out of zero. For my regular hunting rifles I do not use the QD's. I would like to get QD's for my Marlin45-70 though. Yes, I have had to resort to open sights. Daryl [This message has been edited by Daryl D (edited 02-03-2002).]

My personal setup on my .458 Lott is a 2.5x Leupold in a set of Talley Rings, and a Tally peep that rides under a trapdoor in the grip cap. The rings started out with QD levers, but I replaced the Levers with allen screws after catching the levers in brush while hunting Buffalo. I ground the short shank on the allen wrench to 1/2" long, and drilled a hole in the compartment for the sight which is just deep enough to hold the allen wrench. Since the wrench is always with the rifle, it only takes me about a minute to remove the scope.

For my type of hunting in Alaska where most shots on moose and other game are taken within 200 to 300 yards, a QD set of mounts are not a bad idea. However, in my case at least, I like to have a set of iron sights as backup instead of an extra scope. With iron sights one can easily take a 200-yard shot on moose and complete the hunt.
