Heard somebody at work talking about an Elk he saw in Alberta that he figured the antlers were 30" past the rump of the elk when he tilted his head back. Do elk antlers get that big, 30" past the ass! Or is he just a big BSer. [Roll Eyes] Jay

Jay,

A fairly decent bull with its head back about as far as any elk might put it and not have the antlers actually pointing downward barely gets 3/4 of the way back on its body. Judge for yourself if even an unusually large one could pass its rump by 30 inches. Me thinks they would need to be about 8' long. [Roll Eyes] -TONY

Maybe it had an abnormally small midsection and it's rump started right behind it's ears. [Eek!]

I think he's exagerating just a tad. [Wink]

No I don't know of a Merlin, one of the other Alberta guys might. Besides, if there was any elk like that we'd keep them for ourselves. [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

I had a "discussion" with a poster on Huntamerica a while back. He was from the wet side of Washington state and claimed that Rosevelt elk had much bigger antlers than Rocky Mnt elk. He also made this statement.

"customstox, like I said before not, roosevelt, olmpic elk and yes they are much larger. oh the rack was 11' 9" from outside tine to tine its at the la push indian musem, and 135 years old! the last big one I saw was 1965 forks wa 9' 11" olmpic elk"

Eleven foot spread on this elk, hmmmmm, wonder if he is related to your guy at work?

No matter where you go or live, there is at least one of these storytellers. Take it with a grain of salt! Regards, Eagleye.

For many years I have observed numerous massive bull elk during the winter out on the Elk Refuge in Jackson Wyo. Spent hours glassing them or watching them with the naked eye, that is how close I was. For the really big, massive 6 and occasional 7 point bull the best they can do, and I've seen it often, is to scratch their rump with the tip of their antlers.

Even then, they have to kinda turn and twist their bodies to reach the itch on the base of their tail.

Pretty much the same up here (for 6 and 7 pointers I mean). Maybe this guy saw one of those extinct Irish elk in the museum (they have a skull on display with antlers there). Now those are HUGE antlers! - Dan

Find out where this guy buy's his whiskey, because I want some of that stuff. It take a monster Elk to get the tips of his rack back to his rump.
