Here is a photo of an antelope I seen last week. He is an oddball, but has some length and mass.

I copied and hosted the photo on Photobucket. T.Carr

Kudu56: I wonder if my Montana Antelope tag is good in that area of Wyoming???
That is a whopper!
Wow!
Wishing everyone with an Antelope tag a successful and enjoyable Hunt!

PS: Anyone up for a little "friendly" Antelope competition?
I propose an informal B&C score contest for this seasons results among us regular posters on the AR Big Game site (in other words no ones ex-brother in law or the guy down at the tire shop who is not an AR regular could enter!).
I am willing to co-ordinate and keep track of the "on your honor" 2,005 Anetlope Hunt results!
I would even donate a nice outdoor Hunting book as a prize to the "winner" (luckiest Hunter?).
Anyone interested just sign up now before the start of your Antelope season. On this thread or E-mail me at: VarmintGuy@aol.com
Again good luck to all this Antelope season!

Ok, I'm in. I leave in about 3 weeks. I'm taking my brother and friend. They never post on AR, but can I still enter their results just for viewing?

Knowing Les, he'll come back with a whopper. Every time he goes out of state, he comes back with something worth talking about.

Doc: Sure your friends are welcome to post their results. I am going with 3 fellows myself and hopefully folks will also have the results of my friends B&C scores to ponder about if they are interested in a future Hunt for Pronghorns in my area.
I have advised them all (my Hunting mates) that we are going to be doing some night calling and spotlighting for Coyotes and Fox! So no wimping out on me - "oh I'm to tired to shoot Coyotes tonight" ain't gonna cut it on this Safari! We are gonna be in some wonderful Coyote country this fall so I plan on taking advantage of it.
Last year from where I cut off of pavement to the ranch where I Hunted Antelope (40 miles) on the drive in I saw 15 Coyotes and killed two Coyotes and one Badger "drive by" style!
We killed two more in the next few days besides!
Yeah combo Hunts are about twice as much fun as single species Hunts!
One of the fellows I will be Hunting Antelope with has a VERY expensive "computer chip" type camera with an amazing telephoto capability. And I hope to have a postable picture of my entry in our informal contest - as well as my friends results!
Come on lets get some more entrants in here!
Welcome to the contest Doc and best of luck to you and your crew!
Which state are you going to be Hunting in?
I will be in the 700 units of eastern Montana on my Antelope/Turkey/Coyote/Prairie Dog Safari!
I think to sweeten the pot I will add one of my new in the box Primos "Raspy Coaxer" Coyote calls to the first place booty! I have a couple of these that I keep around for new Coyote Hunters to use as they are fine Coyote attracters and easy to use!
So come on you Antelope types sign on before your season starts! Its free and will be fun!
Long live the Antelope!

Just found this on the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Hunting site. It bodes well for this season in eastern Montana!

Antelope Region 700: High numbers, healthy animals with fair fawn over-winter survival (recruitment). Additional harvest opportunities are available for those who purchase an over the counter doe/fawn license. According to John Ensign, region 700 wildlife manager, “The summer survey showed 58 bucks/100 does and a good compliment of mature bucks. The antelope population is above the long-term average.â€

Oh boy - oh boy - oh boy! I am getting excited about the 2,005 Antelope season!!!

Good to see that somebody in Wyoming is on the ball and got the outfitter-welfare tags kicked out!
GREAT NEWS!
We didn't just win, we won in a BIG,BIG WAY!

Wyoming's Legislative Task Force on outfitter concerns met today, and considered the outfitter set-aside proposal (40% of Wyo non-resident elk licenses going to outfitter clients).

When it came to a vote, the outfitter rep on the panel made a motion to keep the proposal going. Out of 10 other Task Force members, there was DEAD SILENCE - NO SECOND to the motion, so it DIED - quickly, cleanly, and decisively.

Hopefully we've nailed some more nails in the coffin of this proposal that keeps coming back from the dead. THANKS to all who helped - when (real) sportsmen stand up on our hind legs, we can do wonders.

Throw my name in the hat for the antelope hunt please. Although I know I'm not going to win, I still like the thought of possibly winning. I will be hunting the week of Sept. 29-Oct. 2 in the panhandle of Okla. It shouldn't be to hard to get a lope on the ground since my buddy who lives out there sent me a picture of one using his telephone from about 35 yards away from the truck. Then he proceeds to tell me they were shooting prairie dogs and saw one with about 16 inches about 125 yards away (while shooting!) So, if I pull one out of the gene pool measuring 14 inches plus, I'll be more then happy. Besides this might be the only chance at a Okla antelope. And it is one of those safari type hunts as well, get the lope on the ground then it's on to prairie dogs, dove and anything else with a death wish!

Graybird: You are in! And best of luck to you there in the Panhandle of Oklahoma!
And be careful on your long drive from Florida!
I honestly have never known anyone that has Hunted Antelope in Oklahoma! I assume its a pretty limited chance for tag draws there?
You have apparently had good luck getting the tag and I hope it continues and you get that 16 incher!
I have harvested two Buck Antelope that were in the high 15's but no 16 inchers by anyone along on any of my Hunts so far. I did measure a 16 1/4" Buck that was taken by the "other group" of Hunters on a ranch I was Hunting some years ago near Miles City, Montana!
Again best of luck on your Speed Goat Safari.

P.S.: A second prize has now been added to the pot! It is a multi-bladed Swiss Army Knife that I have a duplicate of already!

Well, the best thing about this trip is I'm not driving! Just moved from Mississippi Down here and i'm not making that drive again!

Tags are limited here in Okla. The game department has a lottery draw every year. Usually 50 buck tags and 50 doe tags. The worst part of it is that it is a once in a life time hunt, if drawn. Regardless of whether you go or not take an animal or not, it is one and done.

The best part of my deal is a I have a couple of buddies out there who own several thousand acres. My buddy usually draws a landowner permit every couple of years and then he gives them away to our little clan. So, it is a win win for everyone. We come out and drink beer, raise hell and shoot the BS with everyone and hang out a couple times a year shooting prairie dogs, coyotes, pheasant , quail, ect.

Needless to say, this is my first chance and just might be my last at an Okla lope. I've got the ole 22-250 primed and ready!

Graybird: I have harvested Antelope with a 22-250 Rifle and the accuracy and explosive effect on the Antelopes heart/lung area made for a very quick kill! I have also seen Antelope harvested with the 220 Swift and several with 223 Remingtons.
Having said that be sure and not strike the Antelope in the shoulder blade.
Well you ARE the chosen one with one of those really are tags!
Keep up the good luck!

Welcome aboard 300 H-H and Bowhuntrrl!
Best of luck to you both and like 300 H-H says Hunting is so much more than the size of the horns or length of the Bear skin!
I went on my annual SW Montana Archery Elk Hunt some years ago and in ten days of Hunting my partner Rolf and I called in 27 mature Bull Elk!
We never loosed an arrow in the entire Hunt! I was literally shaking each night as I tried to sleep from the after effects of day long adrenaline overdose!
Those Elk were smarter than we were that trip as they would constantly circle our calling positions in the "dog hair" and wind us!
I will never forget or want to replace that Hunt with any other outcome! I now have the greatest of respect for the Hunting of mature Bull on public land!
Again best of luck to all who sign on and I hope you will enjoy your prizes (those that win!).
My partner here in SW Montana got a 148" Whitetail Buck Saturday with his bow! And another Hunting partner got a 155" Whitey with his bow! Both were tree stand Hunting but about 8 miles apart!
The first partner is now off trying to get an Antelope with his bow and an Elk to boot!
The Elk should be buglin and ruttin up a storm any day now!

Was lucky enough to draw 3 tags for 390(East of Townsend and Canyon Ferry) for myself and 2 hunting partners. Happy about that as there are only 150 tags drawn and a pile of lopes out there. Good luck everyone.

MontanaMike: Good work getting into the area before "the day before" the season starts!
That is smart and very preferable! I had Hunted the same ranch in eastern Montana for 18 years or so. Then a few years back the ranch sold, I lost my privilege and I have been scrambling ever since to find a "replacement ranch".
I have done fairly well the past three years and this year we are paying a stiff tresspass fee ($800.00!) on a ranch that has been very heavy into Trophy Antelope production.
We will see!
Again best of luck this season!
And yes it is a blessing on Hunters that so many ranchers and land owners will let Hunters Hunt on their lands.
God bless them!
That is another reason why EVERYONE including ME should be very respectful and Hunt ethically on other folks lands!

I shot a speed goat yeterday morning. Although it was the biggest of the 3 that were shot yesterday, I don't think he will beat the others in our friendly comptition. He was a solid buck at about 13 1/2 inches and had nice body weight. He'll certainly be good eatin'.

I shot a buck and a doe opening day in S.DAK-- the buck was just over 14 on one side 13 1/2 on the other fairly thick. The one my cousin had been watching all summer had started moving between his ranch and a neighbors--naturally he had some relation hunting too--we watched thru binocs as they shot a front leg off and eventually killed him he was a little better than 15--there just wasnt any real good ones around like ther usually is.

300 H&H and Montana Mike: Looks like you guys are in the books for our friendly competition! It looks like everyone was successful on their Antelope venture and that was the most important thing!
I dropped my Antelope off at the taxidermist on our way home from the Hunt to have the Dermastid Beatles eat it clean for a European type skull mount on a plaque!
Doc and Graybird are the others in our competition and when I get a breather I will gather the info needed to judge first and second places amongst you four and will disperse the "prizes" ASAP after that!
I had some fresh Antelope steaks last night and I cooked them to medium rare with flour, salt and pepper in hot butter!
My - they were wonderful!
My Antelope will be measured when the Beatles are done this week. I am guessing it was 13 1/2". But I respectfully have omitted myself from the contest after the fact because I already own the prizes and it wouldn't be much fun giving them back to myself!
Our trip though miserable to the "inth" degree" was still a blast with new friends made and new stories to tell!
I am just so thankful that my recent Rattlesnake bite had healed enough to allow me to slog through the gumbo without to much discomfort!
Lets get more folks involved in next years competition!
If you guys can get the longest horn length and the base circumference of that horn then maybe that will be the simplest way to "judge" first and second places!
More later

I just went out and measured mine with a string tape-i have his head hanging in a tree-measures 14 1/16 7 around the other is 13 7/8 7 around- I was hoping for just a little better but still pretty happy. The best part of it was when my hunting partner-my 4yr old daughter got to help gather and move 160 head of cattle a couple of miles-riding by herself on a big gentle horse- that made the trip even if i hadnt shot anything.
