Does anyone have practical experience with the Speer 270 gr FBSP Semi Spitzer # 2459 loaded in cal 9.3x62 on European game, especially moose & wild boar? Load Details?

It would appear to me that the bullet is highly accurate but is too hard for use on e.g. Wild Boar. (Load used: Speer 270 #2459, OAL: 85.0 mm, case Norma, Fed 210, 59.0 grs N140, Rifle: BRNO ZKK600). I just wonder what experience is out there.

For those interested my favorite loads in cal 9.3x62 for driven wild boar are:

9.3x62 255 gr GECO RNSP ( My current standard load)
Case: Norma
O.A.L.: 82.0 mm
Primer: Fed 210
Powder: N140
Charge: 61.0 gr
Vel.: n/a

9.3x62 247 gr RWS KS (Cone-Point)
Case: Privi Partisan reformed 30-06
O.A.L.: 80.5 mm
Primer: Fed 210
Powder: N140
Charge: 59.0 gr
Vel.: 749 m/s @ 5 m.

9.3x62 247 gr RWS KS (Cone-Point)
Case: RWS
O.A.L.: 80.5 mm
Primer: CCI 200
Powder: N135
Charge: 56.0 gr
Vel.: 755 m/s @ 5 m.

I look forward to hearing from you, load suggestions welcome!

Happy hunting,

Guus

For wild boar my favourite is the TUG from RWS. Where do you shoot wild boar in Holland ?

Guus,

If you look back about a month or so you'll see a 9.3x62 thread on this forum or the African forum. I asked about this bullet as it appeared to do well when I recovered some from accuracy testing. Weight retention in a chalk bank was 75% and the mushroom textbook.

However it received a resounding thumbs down from Mr Atkinson who has had some blow up on quite small game. He obviously has a lot more experience of it than I do but I think
the reason for the difference in our experiences might be due to the fact that I think his are doing at least 300fps more and are in a 1 in 10 twist barrel. The stresses placed on his bullets are out of all proportion to mine which are at 2,400fps out of a 1 in 14 twist barrel. The difference in straight line velocity and rotational velocity could well cause a conventional bullet to perform well in one rifle and poorly in another.

I've not shot many game with the 270gr but a fallow pricket shot at 25 yards was completely penetrated in a raking shot plus a tree and a sapling so I'd say it held together allright in my rifle at those velocities. Very little meat damage but deer fell where it was hit.

I used 58gr of N140 to get a chronoed 2,400fps with lapua cases and a short COL.

I expect 1894 hit the nail on the head..I drive my bullets really fast at max velocity with very max loads in a 26" barrel..I much prefer the Woodleighs and Noslers in 286 and 320 grs. or the Swift 250 at my velocity...

As with any caliber one must load the gun to fit the bullet being used..I'd bet that Speer would be a dandy at intended velocity...

I shot the 270 grain Speer into sand from my 9.3x64b and it turned completely inside-out. Not a speck of lead left on the jacket - which was butt first in orientation. The same bullet catcher caught a Remington .458 factory load with their 510 grain soft point (corelokt i think) and it performed prettey well retaining 60% of its original weight.

I'm going to try to develop a good load with the Nosler 286 grain bullet in my 9.3.

Hi Guus!
I hunt Moose with a Wildcat on the 9.3x62 a 366IH Magnum .We are some friends using this caliber and we have tested Woodleigh/Swift A-frame/Barnes X /c-Cure and my favorite is the 286gr Woodleighs I load it with 77grains VihtaVuori 150 which gives a speed of 830m/s 2723 ft/s at least 30 Moose is killed with this load with very good results. If I know the range will be closer then 40m I would load it just below 800m/s 2625ft/s

We shot a 270 Speer into water-filled plastic jugs. Load was 59.0 of RL15 in 9.3x62. The recovered bullet could have been used in an advertising photo. No experience on game with it yet. At 2400 fps or so I'd expect it to work OK.

Finn Aagaard did several tests in wetpacks of the more common 9.3 mm bullets a couple of years back and these are listed on my website ( http://ulfhere.freeyellow.com/ballistics/wounding.html ) [PS-- I fixed the URL for those who've tried it without success!].

A friend of mine used the Speer bullet on a red stag with good results, but relied on the TUG 286 gr for his boar.

Christer, that wildcat sounds interesting, but what case permits you to get 2700 fps with 286 gr bullet?

Hi Harald!
The 366IH is built on the Norma358 case, and the speed you asked about is close to a max load in that case.I'm not that fond of high speed but have tested the Swift A-frame 250 gr with 3200ft/s in the same wildcat.
Ther's also a 9,3IH Express built on a blown out 338Lapua case where we have tested even higher speed.
