Changed my mind, but staying with 375 caliber. Sako 75 SS, 22 inch bbl in 375/338, which I prefer to call 9.5X64. I am working with one now and it is the most flexible and USEFUL rifle I have ever tested. Detachable 4 rnd mag, 60 degree bolt throw...smooth and fast.

Travel kit includes bulletpuller, Lee Hand Press and 9.5X64 dies. If you need ammo in the boondocks, just pull 250 gr bullets from and 338 Win Mag and stuff in anything from 225 to 285 grs in .375. If you make ammo, slightly compressed loads of H4350 Drive 300 gr 375 bullets 2600 fps and R15 will deliver over 3000 fps with Hornady 225s. Just 45 grs of XMP 5744 drives this bullt 2640 fps, duplicating the 35 Whelen and a fine inexpensive deer load.

Dangerous critters get the 350 gr Woodleigh at 2450 fps, not all that far behind the 416 Rem 400 grainer @ 2400. Paper patched .357 pistol bullets do varmint duty out to 200 yds.

The most flexible power in the 9.5X64 is H4350, and it is one of the Extreme powders...insensitive to heat. No case extraction problems here in Africa or velocitiy drops in Alaska in Winter. Of course we have a nice shoulder to headpsace with, and hence better accuracy than the longer, less efficient 375 H&H. What's not to like about a short 375 H&H that is super accurate and can be made from factory 338 Win ammo in the field?
