For those of you who have been hunting around the world, especially for sheep and ibex, I'm curious to know what the availability is of the various calibers. If one were to be planning a sheep rifle, should they stick to mainstream calibers like the 7mm Rem Mag and 300 Win Mag? The logic behind it being something like a WSM caliber isn't going to be available to buy if your luggage is lost in someplace like Mongolia or Tajikistan.

I agree but support the 7!

having been there before i believe 30:06 is to be found in most places, 7mm rem 300 win 270 243 and maybe a box or 2 of 375's. it's lots easier to find ammo in a larger variety in the US than other countries

might not be a bad idea, to let your guide/outfitter know what you plan to hunt with. you might be able to arrange to have a box of whatever caliber you choose available if you arrange it far ahead of time. on a last minute hunt like some offered for good prices here that might not work, but if youre booking a year or more out, its something to look into. if it can be arranged, bring what you want! like you suggested, something very trim and compact like a wsm might be just what the doc ordered.

If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!
