Ella, my 12 year old, got two hogs last night - a white boar and a black sow - using her 7mm-08 with some light loads I worked up for her last year - 120 gr Sierra ProHunter at 2,650 fps.

For the white one, we sat up above a natural spring where we have a feeder. We don't have a blind there, just a spot cleared on the side of the hill. I've always liked spots like this to hunt from. We used turkey seats to sit on the ground. She dropped it on the spot with a spine shot.

After we loaded up the hog, we drove to another feeder area nearby and parked the truck and proceeded to stalk in - shooting light was almost gone. We had good wind, so we were able to quickly get within 80 yards of the feeder and it was covered with hogs and white tail. One hog was huge, but it unfortunately trotted away before we got within shooting range. With all the rain, the grass was really tall and we couldn't get a good angle, so we worked the wind and got to an elevated area about 40-50 yards from the feeder. The white tail spooked when we initially spotted the hogs and bolted, but the hogs could care less. We got into a sitting position and I told Ella to pick the biggest hog. She wait about 2 minutes for a good shot and squeezed the trigger.

The hogs all bolted, included the one she picked out. We looked for it, but could find anything. She said she made a perfect shot. Since it was getting dark, we went back and got the truck. It was much easier with headlights and a hand held spotlight driving through the area looking for the hog versus a flashlight. We followed a trail we saw the hogs run down (they ran away from the feeder and then circled back). 99% of the time, the animals follow an established game trail when shot. This sow was no exception and we found her about 80 yards from the feeder dead on the game trail under some cedar. Perfect shot behind the shoulder as well by Ella. Just a tough hog.

Tonight we are going to set up on a high ridge and watch a big area for axis and if we see a good buck, try to stalk down to him for a shot.

Hey and good job to you too dad, I know first hand the patience and dedication it takes to put your kids on animals and the benefits of spending that kind of time with them.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Thanks for all the kind words.

She was a bit frustrated this morning when I had her pass on an Aoudad. He was close to 30", but was still young. And of course my friend shot a "big one, close to 30" " last night that taped at 23"...... so she is trying to understand the logic. I told her "to be better than the other guy (or gal) and only take mature trophies." We also tried to stalk up an axis buck this morning that was bedded up on a hillside that we heard give his last "roar" before settling down (so we only knew his approximate location when we started looking). We bumped him twice, but never good enough to get a clear shot. But she enjoyed that.
