I'm a sheephunter, and feel that I should be giving back, many say that you should support the animal you love to hunt, and would like to get a lifetime membership, so my question is should it be Wildsheep foundation (formerly FNAWS)? or Grand Slam Ovis? I do notice that GSO has more auction hunts (which I do like). So if any one can enlighten me on these organizations from their perspective, please tell me, Thanks.

i would donate to habitat or reintroduction programs before i would give a single red cent to any organization who would spend senseless money on who got to exclusivly use the words "GRAND SLAM". the money they spent on lawyers would of put alot of sheep on the mountain. jmo

Chuck,
I went to last years FNAWS convention and was a little put off. Maybe it was just the disorginazation or the way they tried to rip you off by charging to get into the auctions.

Anyway, I'm not saying they aren't a good outfit, but I'd check with game and fish - see who really puts their money on the ground.

I could never support Ovis after they sued FNAWS over a phrase muttered many years ago by better sheep hunters than the current shells.

In Alaska, I would look into the Alaska SFW (Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife). The Alaska Chapter is independent from the other chapters. Word is they are doing good things for wildlife in AK. I doubt there are many habitat projects there, but the fight to protect hunting and the animals we chase is always in the ring.

If that isn't what you want to do then I would say Wildsheep Foundation is the way to go. They have been extremely efficient in aiding in the growth of sheep herds here in Utah.

Another group to look at is Water For Wildlife. This groups flies under the radar, but have been very active in improving water availibility to Desert and California bighorns in the West.

Best of luck deciding what to do. Many times people donate to groups that give back to hunters, while the donation should be best off in what is best for wildlife.

Yep, FNAWS. GSC is for the see-and-be-seen extroverts among us. BTW, I belong to both.

Never give a penny to OVIS (GSC)! They money that was wasted on "owning" the term Grand Slam was asinine!
