I curently have 15 preference Points for elk in CO. In anticipation of drawing a bull tag in area 2 in the next year or two I grabbed a cow tag for the area this year to do some scouting. I have never hunted or for that matter been to that area before. I am looking for someone that has hunted that area for deer or elk that could help out. Looking for places to stay or camp, areas to start hunting in ect. . Surprisingly I have post on a few other sites and got no responses. I know its a hard area to draw but I would have figured someone around would have previously hunted the area that would not mind ahring some info.

My family has hunted Area 2 for a bunch of years. We always pull cow tags for the 4th season. The only time you can hunt bulls in that area with a rifle is the early season. I haven't hunted it then, but would imagine that the secret would be water. It's pretty dry there and the early season will be hot. I'd look to the eastern border of the area since it runs along the Snake River. There are some pockets of water in the form of ponds created for livestock over by lookout mountain that might be worth looking at. I know where some big bulls hang out in the late season, but don't know if they are there earlier. Since I'm also stockpiling points for that area, I currently have 12, I'm not going to tell yu where they are. There are some really big bulls in the area. I've seen some big 6x6's and a couple years ago I saw a 7x7 that I know would make the Boone and Crockett book with ease. He was absolutely huge!!!!!! I picked up a matched set of sheds from a big 6 pt a couple years ago that have main beams over 55 inches. Elk that big are very rare. As to camping spots, there are some good spots by the Vermillion Bluffs and also by Lookout Mountain. There is also a small public lot off County Road 4 by the Snake River. Good luck. Hunt hard and don't be afraid to walk. There is a lot of country in that area that you need to look over and the best way to root the elk out is on foot. Mac

Mac Thnaks for the info. I hope to find those big bulls hideout this fall when I cow hunt so I can return the following year and place a tag on him. I am going to use the bow the first few days so water will be what I am looking for. I will try to set up on a water hole. I also plan on reallt driving and walking the area as much as I can to get to know it. After 15 + years I want to be prepared whar I finally draw.
