I have never loaded anything for the 30-06, this will be the first. My uncle would like for me to load him up some rounds for whitetail hunting in Pennsylvania. Shots will be no more then 200yds. and as close as mabe 20yds. What is a good powder bullet combo? I have imr4064, H4831, and imr3031 on hand. The 4064 is the best thing for my dads 308 and the H4831 is what i use in my 7mag. any suggestions are appreciated. Ryan

Find out what bullet he shoots now or what he may want. If you do what he wants it will work better.

If he wants you to pick a bullet then a Pt'd Remington Corelokt will be fine in the weight the rifle is sighted in with now. But again find out what he likes. Any bullet weight from 125 gr to 200 grs will be ok.

imr 4064 is perhaps one of the most accurate powders available. It will do fine with any of those weights. I would not bother with the 4831 or any hot loads. A "4064" loaded "06" is plenty for deer.

A final caution. Manufacturing ammunition requires a licence. There are also liability concerns. I load for my son and myself. That's it.

Give her some testesterone!

WW case
WLR primer
Alliant RL-22 powder
A good 180 or 165gr bullet. I favor Hornady or Nosler big game bullets. You will be impressed with these compressed loads. I guarantee it. sure-shot

I agree with the recommendation to use IMR 4064 powder.

Here's a good load:

150 gr Hornady Spirepoint Interlock bullet
52 gr. IMR 4064
Any brand of 30-06 brass (but don't intermix brands)
Any non-magnum large rifle primer (but, again, don't intermix different primers)
Load to an overall length of 3.25 inches

That load will be excellent for any whitetail or similar-sized deer in Pennsylvania or elsewhere. In fact, that will be an excellent load for any animal up to 500 pounds, and I wouldn't hesitate to use it on elk or even moose if it's what I had when a shootable elk or moose turned up.

Actually, any 150 gr. bullet would work well. For deer I prefer the non-premium bullets as they tend to expand more quickly on thin-skinned and small animals such as deer than the premium bullets, which tend to be a bit too tough for this application. For large animals the premium bullets are much better.

The Hornady Interlock tends to be a special case -- it's a non premium bullet that has characteristics that approach those of the premiums.

Only if you are manufacturing ammo as a business, ie charging money, is a liscense needed.

My pet whitetail brush load for what you describe is the 180 gr. Round Nose Rem Corelokt at about 2600 FPS.. A nice mild load that literally hammers whitetail, 4831 is a great powder in the 06...so is 4064.

Anything mentioned so far will work. I prefer 150's for whitetail, so with the powders you have available, 4064 would be indicated. The 52 grains mentioned is probably okay, but start with about 50 and work up to make sure (each rifle is a little different). Just about any 150 grain bullet will do, but I prefer spitzers because they hold their velocity better and therefore have a flatter trajectory and hit with more energy as compared to the same weight RN at a similar muzzle velocity. I personally use Nosler Ballistic Tips in my '06 for whitetails and am VERY happy with them, but most other bullets will do about as well. Use the one that performs best in your particular gun.

I have 3 30/06 this load shoots well in all 3
