Ive been thinking about doing a mule deer hunt this fall. Where would one look for a decent hunt at a decent price. I am not that hung up on huge trophies. I would like a chance at a representative mule deer. I also am not that crazy about taking long range shots. Its just a personal thing I like to be under 100yrds when i take an animal.

Check out backcountryhunts.com The outfitter is named Steve Jones. He is well known. Been on the TV hunting shows.

Hunts are reasonably priced and are in NM.

I've hunted with him a couple of times.

All the pros I know in Cal, know him.

www.blackmountainhunts.com has a cheap mule deer hunt.

As for finding a mule deer buck within 100 yards.....Well I'd suggest you spend some time at the range and become comfortable with at least a 200 yard shot. Your bullet, from any high powered rifle will not differ more than a couple inches between 100 and 200 yards. I would not waste my money on a Mule deer hunt if I could not shoot at least 250 yards with confidence. Most mulies aren't coming to feeders or food plots where the hunter has set conditions and you probably won't find them in extremely thick stuff (on a guided hunt).

Best of Luck in Your search.

Nothing wrong with British Columbia for mule deer. The province has excellent numbers and there is usually multi species avaiable. Your dollar might go a little farther too.

Mule deer under 100 yds. ...........that makes filling that bill somewhat more difficult. I have a good friend who is an excellent guide in northern Colorado....he would do an good job for you. You will seldom get a "less than a hundred yard shot" tho. Maybe twice that...........

SNYDER700,

For deer in northeastern Colorado, I'd look just about anywhere north of HWY 40 and west of Craig. Lots of public land. Some of the game management units like area 1,2,10 and 211 will take several preference points to draw. Some of the others like 3,4,11,301 are pretty much a sure thing for tags. There is lots of BLM, State Trust land and National Forest in the area.

If I was going for the first time, I'd hunt the latest season in the year and I'd look to the north of the town of Maybell along the river. Lots of bluffs, draws and western cedar covered ridges in this area. Pretty good elk available too. You can hunt both deer and elk at the same time. The bull elk won't be huge, but there shouldn't be too much trouble taking a good cow for meat. The mature bucks in the area will run from 22-26 inches in spread for average and will have 4 points per side. Not huge, but nice deer and some bigger ones can be found if luck and the weather is on your side. Snow on the ground is a big plus in this area. Bring a predator call too. Huge numbers of coyotes and bobcats around the bluffs.

thanks mac. sounds very good and a lot of choices. i have just aquired permission to hunt some private land at no fee in wyoming. i'll probably hunt this area again due to this fellow being so generous in letting us hunt. i do not know how the dates run so i could put in for both areas. i plan to fly into denver and drive up to nw wyoming. i want to see some of that area. again thanks for the ideas. i'll pass them along to my two hunting partners and see how they feel.

hey mac!! you spelled my name wrong!! the snyder fellows are the well educated and moderately rich guys along my family tree. im of the lesser "sniders" we are not as educated and our pockets don't run as deep. thought you'd find this humerous and it will help you if you meet one of us here in north carolina.

montana

montana

do it yourself, take a look at blm, state and block management land in rural areas of north-central montana (havre down to lewistown, great falls east to malta). don't neglect the school sections and don't be afraid to knock on the door. a hundred yards or less should be no problem if you stalk the coulees and keep your head down.

i've got an extensive "article" somewhere on hunting deer in this area of montana somewhere on my website. if you are itnerested, let me know, and i will be sure to get it to you.
