I just got orders to Altus AFB, OK. I need craving information on how the hunting is there. Someone please let me know. Jim

I was at Ft Sill, OK in 1995-96. The duck hunting on Tom Stead resevior can be fantastic. The goose hunting is equally good. There are lots of pretty nice deer and varmint galore. Most of the land we hunted was private, but the landowners were friendly and welcomed responsible hunters. Overall, I would rate the area highly.

I could be more specific if I knew what you liked to hunt. However in that area of the state they have great Dove, waterfowl, quail, varmints, and deer. There are better deer hunting parts of the state but that area has a growing herd.Wish you the best of luck

Hey Pard, There are plenty of coyotes, grey fox, and bobcats to hunt. All you have to do is ask permission to do some calling. The deer hunting is good, but the seasons are short. The leases are a lot more reasonable than down here. You will have plenty of time to hunt your land here before and after the OK deer seasons. I didn't know you were in the Air Force. Thank you for serving your country. If you are into "things cowboy," I STRONGLY recommend you visit a place that I hope to spend days at, sometime. In OKC, you'll find the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, home of the Cowboy Hall of Fame. Being a CAS competitor and having watched just about every western ever made since I was a kid, this is on my "to do" list someday. With MapQuest.com putting you at two hours, 43 minutes away (which means, in real time, about two hours or so), you could easily spend a LOT of time at the museum. As for hunting... I'm sure you could find enough ".338-worthy" opportunities to keep you busy. Good luck with your new assignment. Russ [ 12-12-2002, 02:05: Message edited by: Russell E. Taylor ]

Jim, Look me up when you get here. There are deer, turkey, geese, ducks, quail, and dove in good supply. Elk is through a lottery. The deer are smaller than the one's farther up north, probably similar to the San Antonio area. Gene

338, You are moving to the MECA compared to Texas. The Black Kettle National Grass lands are just north of there. As has been mentioned by others everything you could want to hunt is there. I hunt just north of there at Woodward and have taken some good Whitetails and Mulies. But the Quail hunting is second to nowhere in the US. They always have birds when nobody else does. There are several gun clubs that you can join that lease thousands of acres all over the state. I am not slighting Texas hunting you just have large tracts of Public land to hunt. Chuck T

Check out Buffalobwana's buck on this forum. His place is on the Texas side of the Red River, but not a long way from Altus. You should have PLENTY of coyotes, likely some feral hogs, and there should be some prairie dog towns in the area. Dove and quail can be excellent.

Stonecreek I will check that out. Yes there are dogs on the Black kettle and they can be shot. As for Coyotes, government trappers took 76 off our ranch in Woodward three years ago. So I would say we have plenty of dogs. And lots of Hogs along the river. Chuck T
