This was a few weeks ago but my biggest Elk. Here is the readers digest version.

Hunt started out with a full bright moon and windy as heck. I usually have no issues finding Elk but this year with the mentioned wind and moon it was making it very diffacult. The first four days I hunted a honey hole that I have ALWAYS seen Elk in. Well there is a first for everything. I think with the combination of extremely dry conditions, wind and moon they were simply not down that far yet.

So I moved my hunt to another location just on the fringes of an area where all the city hunters go, lots of people in a small area. I figured they would have pushed the Elk into canyons on the edges of this area.

I was right. I got a little of late start but went walking into this area. As I rounded a thick cedar tree I saw a Bull coming off a tank and he had about 15 cows with him and two smaller bulls. He was not very big and thought he was a rag horn. He was about 100 yards and I could only see the upper 1/3 of his back. Not an ideal target for an off hand shot. So I froze and a few minutes later he walekd off. I thought they had not watered and maybe my movement and had spooked them off slightly.

I saw a ground blind from previous Archery hunt and decided to have a seat and see if they come back. ABout 5 minutes later this bad boy decides he is thirsty. at about 50 yards I nailed him in both lungs with 110 grains of FFg black powder behind a T/C 350 Maxi Ball. The bullet entered a little higher than I wanted and was found in the perfect mushroom on the off shoulder. He ran about 60 yards.

The funny part, I was bymyself that morning and forgot my cell phone. Anyone that has hunted Elk before can tell you, while not impossible, it is very diffacult to load an ELk by yourself. I was about 30 minutes from the house so I drove home and got help.

It took my Dad and I another hour to load him. Very diffacult to get to him and load. But we got it done and man does he taste good!!!!!!!

This was not "rag horn" bull that left. THis Bull was bigger than the one that had just left. For clarity I call rag horns immature bulls or less than a 250 score.

I guessed this one at 300. A long time hunting partner and taxidermist guessed him at 295. I don't care really, he tastes delicious Big Grin
