I have GPS with radios built in. Is there any Idaho regulations against the use of 2 way radios while hunting? I will be flying to Idaho, and I need to figure out how to get the frozen meat home. Thanks, Dan

Dan Most states don't allow radios..so built in with Gps would probably be a NO! You build some great knives , I bought one of your sheep handle hunters, love it! For shipping frozen meat you might want to pick a processor and have only the cut and wrapped meat sent home....Ask Idaho F&G about some local buthchers!

Yep, you may use your two way radios. I just checked through the 2005 Id. F&G rules and there are no restrictions on them. Where are you hunting?? Good luck. L.W. "A 9mm bullet may expand but a .45 bullet sure ain't gonna shrink."

Farrknives; Actually, Idaho does have some restrictions on the use of mobile radios while hunting big game. I have looked for the regulations, but haven't been able to locate tonight. Here's a quote from the Montana regs that is very simular to Idaho's. The Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (FWP) has posted a notice to hunters using advanced technology while hunting. Specifically, two way radios, cell phones, motion detectors, or night vision equipment are illegal "to assist in tracking big game animals or in running them to another hunter positioned nearby". The FWP has seen an increase in the use of such technology in recent years and gives a phone number to report violations witnessed in the field. The FWP also notes that using such technology for "safety and communication" while hunting is legal. The last sentence of that reg is important. I live and hunt in Idaho, and we have used the hand held units for safety since they came out without any problems.

Brassbender: Would be interested to know the specifics of the 2-way radio restrictions of which you speak; I have just completed reading the 2005 Idaho Big Game rules cover to cover and I did not see any mention of a restriction on 2-way radios, asked the local Conservation Officer and he was unaware of any such restriction other than the loosely worded: (from page 17) "It is unlawful: - to party hunt, or help fill another hunters tag" The C.O. stated it would be "at his discretion as to whether you violated that regulation by using 2-way radios." He did mention that he reccomends taking some form of 2 way communication whenever you are in the woods. IV minus 300 posts from my total (for all the times I should have just kept my mouth shut......)

Would have to echo those interpretations of "helping to fill anothers tag". My local CO's feel keeping track of each other while hunting is fine, but verbally communicating a game animal's location and directing another hunter to it is illegal. I know several CO's monitor radio traffic on FRS channels during general season here.
